Global Industry Alliance for Marine Biosafety funded a study: on impacts of biofouling on GHG emissions; which found that only a thin layer of slime on ships' hull can increase GHG emissions for up to 25%. On #WorldEnvironmentDay together with our sister project IMO-NORAD TEST Biofouling project we would like to continue raising awareness that following good biofouling management practices is beneficial to the environment both from biodiversity and climate change aspects, i.e. prevents the spread of invasive species and reduces GHG emissions. A Committee for Climate Mitigation Tools Can Address Technology Fears 🚀🌍 The list of technologies that Danish farmers can use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations is extensive. Unfortunately, skepticism about some climate mitigation tools exists among some politicians, consumers, and farmers. Additionally, it can be challenging for farmers to select the safest and most effective technologies. Therefore, we at @SEGES Innovation propose the establishment of an independent committee to assess and define the best climate mitigation tools. The committee should consist of representatives from universities, think tanks, knowledge institutions, and agencies and serve as a link between agriculture and the political system. By establishing such a committee, the implementation of the most effective climate mitigation tools can be accelerated, helping Danish farmers to meet the requirement to reduce emissions by 2030. G7 ITALIA ministers of environment, climate and energy agreed on a 35 page long communique that presents a compendium of shared commitments to address climate, biodiversity and pollution problems. #G7 also offers to help G20 Brasil 2024 to develop a shared approach to #bioeconomy via a "technical workshop for sharing information and best practices for designing robust and comprehensive #bioeconomy indicators." The ministers "recognize the need for sustainability criteria adapted to different economic activities producing and using #biological resources, where such criteria do not yet exist, particularly respecting the limits of sustainable #biomass production so that biological resources: are used sustainably and efficiently, kept in use for as long as possible to achieve #waste prevention and minimization, are recovered and #recycled to make the material available for another use, and energy is recovered."

Despite the necessary assumptions, it is great to see a wholistic recommendation based on: 🥇 Real life antifouling performance comparison 🛳️ Real life trading patterns 🔥 Impact on climate change (mostly linked to fuel consumption) 🦀 Impact on ocean pollution and biodiversity (passive releases plus those caused by In-Water Cleaning). Let me be provocative.... do you know what the model will show for world wide trading, including warm water and frequent/long idling? They *naturally* remove carbon (along with trees, soil, and algae). The other type of removal is through *technology* (e.g., carbon capture). To be sure that Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is truly durable--removed from the global C cycle--the "C-Capsule" standard is in place. Its goal is to provide transparency and access to the Voluntary Carbon Market.
