The 2024 FIRST Global (IFCA) Challenge in Athens was nothing short of magical. ✨ Standing in the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic games took place, I couldn’t help but feel the immense weight of history blending with the boundless potential of the future. This wasn’t just another event—it was a global movement. 🌍 More than 190 countries came together, not to compete in sports, but to race toward a better, more sustainable world through innovation and technology. These young minds didn’t just build robots; they built bridges—across cultures, languages, and continents. Watching them work side by side, we saw firsthand how technology can unite us, how creativity and collaboration can transcend borders, and how hope for a brighter future can inspire action. The energy was beyond words. From the electrifying Black Eyed Peas performance to the inspiring moments of teamwork and perseverance, it was a celebration of what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose. I’ve never been prouder to be a part of something so powerful. These young innovators reminded us all of what’s possible when we dream big, work together, and believe in a better future. A mission is coming to an end! It is exactly two years since Esch2022 - European Capital of Culture was officially launched! In 2022, the foundation was laid, an enormous cultural programme was created, various very important facets of the project were brought to the fore, a very large network was spun, not only regionally and across borders but also at a European level, Kaunas 2022 Fondacija Novi Sad - Evropska prestonica kulture, which is the essence of a European Capital of Culture project! Culture puts a focus on Europe ... Europe puts a focus on culture! What has been created and how it will shape the future? Glad to meet with Germany's First Mayor of Hamburg Dr Peter Tschentscher and his delegation last week. We witnessed the signing of a Joint Workplan Agreement between Enterprise Singapore and Hamburg Invest - a significant step towards fostering greater collaboration and commercial partnerships with key German states. Singapore and Germany are like-minded trade partners who share a strong commitment to fostering sustainable growth and innovation, anchored by our collaboration through the Germany-Singapore Framework for Sustainability and Innovation. Dr Tschentscher and I had a productive exchange on Singapore’s and Hamburg's approaches to building a sustainable economy, our industry decarbonisation efforts, as well as potential opportunities to strengthen partnerships in mutual areas of interest, such as low-carbon technologies. I will be at the Hinterland conference tomorrow, joining a panel discussion about startup-corporate collaboration and how we can build more effective innovation ecosystems in Europe. Under the current economic climate, a lot of centralization and efficiency programs also impact enterprises’ ability to drive and to grow from innovation. While efficiency is a prerequisite (and we still have work to do there in our economy), I am convinced we need to get much better leveraging the strengths of our decentralized ecosystem, our Mittelstand and our talent. If we want back to the top, we need to reinvigorate our builder’s spirit and grow from building new things - not just squeezing the old and looking at others that we should and could not mimic anyways.
