What advice would you give to a Year 12 student about preparing themselves for the future?

I joined Raleigh Chamber this morning for our community success forum! The forum provided a deep dive into the latest Regional Skills Analysis (RSA), a survey of nearly 1,000 businesses across the greater Triangle region powered by RTI International. The study uncovered local businesses' short- and long-term hiring needs, the training and education levels employees need for future jobs, and whether employers plan to expand their workforce. Some of the highlights: 1. The Triangle expects future growth across most industries & sectors, with the most significant growth expected in the public sector, healthcare, and professional services. 2. Triangle employers identify housing, childcare, and wages as the most challenging obstacles in recruiting & retaining talent today. 3. Durable, essential, or commonly referred to as "soft skills" remain difficult to find amongst job seekers & employees. The four most significant soft skills barriers identified include: responsibility and self-discipline, critical thinking, communication, and taking initiative. 4. Employers are starting the process of "developing" talent earlier through formal internships, apprenticeships, and career & technical education (CTE). 5. Today, there is a shortage of higher education faculty. A remedy to the problem is leveraging industry practitioners who bring real-time experiences to the classroom. There are efforts to create pathways from industry into the classroom through teaching. Today was incredibly informative, and it was wonderful to hear top talent headlines impacting the Triangle. ❓I'm curious about what you may be hearing or seeing as it relates to workforce demands in your regions? I'll be speaking at ASU+GSV Summit on Tuesday, April 16 on the panel "Skills-Based Hiring is Not Just an Executive Order" STARs* have been showing up for our country every day - they represent 50% of our workforce. When major employers, state, and local governments commit to STARs, they send the message: if you can do the job, you can get the job. To date, 21 states are tearing the paper ceiling - starting with the State of Maryland's commitment to hire STARs in 2022 - opening opportunities for more than 400,000 STARs who have historically been excluded from state jobs. But tearing the paper ceiling goes beyond removing degree requirements - it means breaking down the multiple barriers STARs face at every turn as they navigate the labor market (biased algorithms, the lack of alumni networks, misperceptions, and more). *STARs = the 70 million U.S. workers skilled through alternative routes like military service, community college, partial college completion, workforce training programs, skills bootcamps, on-the-job and more, rather than a bachelor's degree. I owe this achievement to Alyssa Hurtado, Xenia M., Alistair Scott, Bitan Kar an the rest of the Basta community for all of your support throughout this process! 💡 The most meaningful takeaway from the Basta fellowship, which I will continue to keep in mind, is the importance of constantly assessing how the steps I take in my career align with my ultimate goals. One week, we focused on critically analyzing how the roles we apply for truly align with our values and aspirations. This lesson profoundly impacted my job search process, helping me reflect on my skills and envision how I want to grow as I advance in my career. 📝 As a college student, I frequently heard about the importance of networking. However, without an established network, I found it challenging to know where to start. To overcome this, I had to push myself out of my comfort zone. This involved contacting colleagues to connect me with their networks for informational interviews, emailing professionals with the subject line "I want to work with you," and even directly asking people in desired industries if they were hiring. I always included the tagline that if I could learn English in six months, I could learn anything else just as quickly. 🚨 Advice to other first-gen students: Embrace this process of critical thinking and stepping out of your comfort zone. As the first people in our families to explore these new experiences and spaces, we are breaking generational barriers to achieve a better future. This means being discerning about the places we apply to, how we present ourselves, and the creative ways we can advocate for ourselves.” We are so happy for you, Rosalía.
