The Australian Academy of the Humanities' response to the ATEC Discussion Paper makes the following key points. We need an ATEC that will: 1. Prioritise national strategy (which the sector is lacking) over administration (which belongs in the Department of Education); avoid overloading the Commission with administrative functions which would limit its capacity to provide strategic advice into the future. 2. Ensure Commissioners have current, historical and relevant knowledge of the higher education system. 3. Define education as more than ‘useful’ or a prerequisite for occupations, recognising that learning is good in its own right — for the individual and society. 4. Consult educators and researchers (not just university executives) to ensure effective decision-making. 5. Undertake whole-of-sector planning, auditing and research. 6. Collaborate with professional bodies to obtain expert advice that’s independent of universities. 7. Utilise Australia’s Learned Academies’ disciplinary expertise to help steward the nation’s sovereign intellectual capabilities. Our audits have consistently stressed the importance of updated disclosures to our partner institutions. This mandate, ensuring the availability of key information—from administrative structures to admission processes and research initiatives—facilitates better decision-making for stakeholders like students and parents. Aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this directive encourages institutions to be more transparent, elevating educational standards. Here is a look into HSI rates since 2010! The decrease from 2019-2020 could be due to various reasons, but the most impactful was the pandemic and the decrease in enrollment of Latinx students in higher education. We just got published in #internationalhighereducation by Center for International Higher Education with Kateryna Suprun on past and present developments in European performance-based funding approaches (PBF). We argue that  #PBF could be more often viewed as a periodic boost to stimulate efficiency rather than a permanent solution from where there is no return. We also remind that pursuing greater international convergence of PBF models should not be an unquestioned policy goal, as national contexts differ in many respects.

Moving beyond data... As an advocate for using data to improve educational outcomes and a big fan of this particular resource. I often find the conversation stops at data analysis or in this case ’use’. But how do we transform data into actionable insights and move towards wisdom? The Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom (DIKW) hierarchy, provides a valuable framework for understanding this journey. 🔹 Data Collection: Gather relevant data from different sources. 🔹 Data Analysis: Process and uncover patterns, trends, and correlations. 🔹 Information Extraction: Organise and present analysed data as meaningful information. 🔹 Knowledge Generation: Contextualise information within existing knowledge frameworks. 🔹 Wisdom Application: Make informed decisions and take actions to improve outcomes. But it's not as simple as a linear process. It's about integrating expertise, experience, and asking critical questions. Wisdom informs the collection of new data, leading to even deeper insights. Yesterday, Education Ministers released the NSRA Expert Panel's report to inform a better and fairer education system. The recommendations in summary: ⭐ Lifting student outcomes for all students  ⭐ Achieving equity in schooling ⭐ Improving student wellbeing  ⭐ Attracting and retaining teachers ⭐ Making better use of data ⭐ Improving funding transparency and accountability mechanisms ⭐ Implementing mechanisms to support innovation and achieve reform There is no doubt immediate, systemic and long-term action is necessary to achieve the Review’s ambition.
