Here is our update of the day! The #OlympicTorchRelay is passing through Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin, a UNESCO #WorldHeritage site since 2012! This landscape has been shaped by coal extraction from the 1700s to the 1900s, documenting the living conditions of workers and the solidarity to which it gave rise. It features mining pits, coal transport infrastructure, railway stations, workers’ estates and mining villages including social habitat, schools, town halls and more! Yesterday, it passed by Belfries of Belgium and France, inscribed on the UNESCO #WorldHeritage List since 1999. Through its passage, the torch was able to observe the Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles of architecture of these belfries, built between the 11th and 17th centuries.
