I am participating in Walk for Water and I would love for you to consider donating. Why have I chosen to participate? WaterAid Australia was established to improve the lives of people currently living without clean water, decent toilets or good hygiene. This goal is also shared by the United Nations (SDG6). Holovision and Watkins Steel work with many of WaterAid Australia's "Water Leaders", helping to deliver critical infrastructure projects to the growing Australian population. While working on upgrades at live sewerage treatment plants might not be the most desirable environment to work, the health outcomes for the Australian community are undeniable. 8 weeks ago, my cousin called to tell me that my uncle was in hospital in a critical condition; he did not survive another 24 hours. For those who don't know, half my family lives in PNG, where access to basic human needs is a privilege. On the 21st March 2024, the World Bank published an article which stated: "In Papua New Guinea, only 40% of people have access to safe drinking water, one of the lowest rates in the Pacific Islands. Women and girls of school age generally assume the burden of water collection for their families." Additionally the World Health Organization estimates that there are only 0.5 nurses per 1000 people in PNG, a number that is 29 times lower than here in Australia. Needless to say, the outcome of my uncles condition may have been different if he had the same access to basic needs as what we do here in Australia. We are proud to support the call for removing VAT on defibrillators!   We joined forces with the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK and other lifesaving organisations, urging political parties to include this in their election manifestos.   Research shows that the nearest defibrillator in deprived areas is over a mile away on average. The rising costs of AEDs, compounded by the current VAT, hinder community efforts to enhance public safety. On Wednesday, I spent an excellent evening at a #fundraising event organised by Woop Woop and Tir Pontypridd. TP are a #community group aiming to raise funds for the purchase of land in the Pontypridd area; land that will be used for #biodiversity and #wellbeing purposes. Also attended by Tir Natur – a #charity created to purchase and #rewild land in bio-depleted uplands of Mid #Wales – we watched the excellent @kneppestate documentary and contemplated the possibilities for returning a greater balance to our use of land, our consideration of #nature and the utilisation of natural resources. The Q&A session was particularly inspirational. I am of course, horribly biased. This is a subject that is close to my heart and colours my thinking. I absolutely believe that with a little #creativity, #imagination and #commitment, #businesses can play an incredibly active part in both the #dialogue and in making things happen. As businesses we make choice after choice that affect our local and wider #communities, with decision making that is often accidentally naïve. To broaden clear opportunities, we just need that heady mix of the right crowd, the right ideas and constructive #conversation (leading to expert #conservation) to nudge/push/pull/drag (delete as applicable) things in the right direction. Torrential rainfall and flooding have devastated Rio Grande do Sul, in one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit Brazil. So far, more than half a million people have been displaced from their homes. Today is World Water Day. In the UK, we often take water for granted as it is readily available. However, there are still 2.2 billion people around the world who do not have access to safely managed drinking water. This includes 115 million people who drink surface water, which is often dirty and unsafe. These individuals have to spend hours each day walking to find water and then drink and wash in unsanitary conditions. On this day, let's spare a thought for those who are less fortunate and do not have access to clean water.
