I had the great pleasure of attending the Executive Alliance - A Catalyst for Women Leaders in Maryland's 2024 Honor Roll Award for Women's Representation ceremony where CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield received an Honor Roll award. The Honor Role award recognizes publicly traded and private companies and organizations in Maryland that employ women in at least 30% of their executive leadership rolls AND have women in at least 30% of their board of director seats. So #CareFirstProud to work for an organization that is a leader in supporting the recruitment, development, and advancement of women in the workplace and corporate boards. However, there is still work to be done. In Maryland, only 26 out of 673 director seats are held by women, lagging behind the national average for gender and racial diversity. In comparison, Fortune 500 companies have 30% of women hold board seats, while the S&P 500 has 33%. There are 8 Maryland companies with all male boards. Executive alliance seeks to empower and diversify women leaders as they grow and develop through their careers. Since 1993 they have been a catalyst for women leaders in the greater Baltimore area. Each March, we celebrate National Women's History Month: a chance to recognize women's varied and often under-recognized accomplishments throughout history. DYK? Women comprise 70% of the healthcare workforce and 59% of medical, biomedical, and health sciences graduates, yet are the minority at leadership levels — holding only 25% of senior executive roles. The Healthcare Council's Nominating & Governance Committee continues to build gender diversity on its board. We are honored and grateful to have six women leaders as trustees: Kathleen Chavanu Gorman, Kimberly Russo, Deneen Richmond, Natalie Williamson, Carin Bouharoun, MHSA, and Galina Madjaroff Reitz, PhD. In the DMV we are making progress but can do better. Currently, 17 out of our 70 member-organizations have women who are Presidents and/or CEOs of acute and allied healthcare facilities. That is about 25 % -- a number that is representative of the national average but should be much higher. #WomenLeadership #Healthcare #WomensHistoryMonth

Empowered and inspired after attending an incredible women's leadership breakfast this morning. Surrounded by dynamic and accomplished women, I took away valuable insights on leadership, resilience, and lifting each other up. Grateful for moments like these! You've seen the memes and TikToks, but THIS is what it looks like to meaningfully make a statement on something circulating in the news cycle. As marketers and de facto stewards of the brand, the messages you put out there are a big deal. You pore over drafts and versions to make sure what you're sharing has purpose and is received as intended — because you want to be thoughtful about what you're sharing with the masses. You want to make sure it feels authentic and aligned with the brand's mission/vision and your own values. And, most importantly, you care deeply about what you're co-signing as a human living in the world we live in.

Historically Black women have been passionate about advocating for justice for their communities for centuries in America (and globally). You can look back to women like Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B Wells Mary McLeod Bethune, and Shirley Chisholm.  In healthcare specifically, you will find women like Rebecca Lee Crumpler the first Black woman to receive a medical degree back in 1864. She was also a pioneer in health advocacy for Black people after the civil war.  And the list goes on and on.  Advocacy is just something we do and we’re good at it.  We leverage this strength in the workplace as well.    Black women are more likely than any other group of employees, including men of color and women of other races and ethnicities, to: 🙋🏾♀️spend a substantial amount of time on DEI work that falls outside their formal job responsibilities 🗣️speak out against bias and discrimination at work (and more likely to experience retaliation for doing so) 🪜step up as mentors and sponsors to other women of color [Source: Lean In - Women in the Workplace Report] It is in this spirit and  legacy of advocacy that I am proud to share the speakers  Black Women In Healthcare Leadership: Lifting as We Climb”  Featuring nine trailblazers in healthcare leadership and just overall phenomenal women. This is crazy to me. The majority of the tech leaders in my world are women. Many people observed that most of the people I wrote about in Recoding America were women, and wondered if I had made an effort to skew female. I had not. They were just representative of the kind of leadership I was trying to describe. And yet I bet if you were asked to think of "generic government tech leader" your brain would still first (even if just for a second) see a man. Mine even might. Culture is a crazy powerful thing. On the one hand, we have to acknowledge the hold it has over us just because we've grown up in this culture our whole lives, even as the culture shifts. On the other hand, we have to see it in order to see past it. There's that moment in the Barbie movie when Barbie and Ken are skating down the beach boardwalk when they've just arrived in our world. For no discernible reason, Ken is starting to feel really good. Barbie, on the other hand, is not. “I feel kind of ill at ease, like I don’t know the word for it but I’m…conscious, but it’s…myself that I’m conscious of.” She's starting to breathe the air of our culture, and it's having an almost instant effect. I found that moment both funny and devastating. It's the snapshot of a slow train wreck any parent of a girl is forced to watch. One moment your daughter is running up a hill with total abandon and shouting all the lines to Hamilton. The next moment she's stepping onto the bus and realizing that she's been seen with different eyes, not as an adorable kid, but as a young woman, and all the baggage that comes with that. Suddenly it's herself she's conscious of, in Barbie's words. It's a tiny shift, one she doesn't have words for, but it happens over and over and over again and you realize you cannot, and never could, protect her from our culture. She has to live in it, just as you do. You will both live in a culture where when asked to name a female tech leader, people will say Siri. And hopefully it will be okay. Ok, I'm obviously weepy because empty nesting, etc, but what I'm saying is I really appreciate people like Clare who not only demonstrate amazing leadership but are also willing to narrate the culture. Thank you, Clare, and everyone else disarming our culture by explaining it.

Tomorrow we will celebrate Mother's Day in Sweden 💖💐🇸🇪 to all the mothers of the world 🌎 who went through this nightmare and continue going through it in 2024. Chief we need you in Nordics! It is especially relevant to the spouses of expatriate assignees of all types, shapes and forms: we do not even have a right to work in most of the countries, and, most people believe we are there to accept this systemic and institutionalised dependency, serving the business by depriving our careers, wellbeing and economy. This time is over.
