So we want to make a better effort at introducing you. Meet our friends at The Voting Access for All Coalition (VAAC)! VAAC’s mission is to ensure that all persons in pretrial situations, individuals about to be released from prison, and those formerly incarcerated, along with their families and community members, have the opportunity and knowledge they need to exercise their right to vote in every election. NEW has worked with the VAAC as a fiscal sponsor. We're proud to work alongside the VAAC in pursuit of our shared vision of a just and thriving society. “The Voting Access for All Coalition is a great example of one of the types of organizations that can turn to NEW when they find themselves in need of a fiscal sponsor. Many organizations come to us because they don't have IRS 501c3 status - or don't have it yet. Still others come to us because they intend to apply for a grant that requires annual financial audits, and the cost of an audit (often $12,000 or higher every year) doesn't make sense for them. VAAC is the third sort - a group of nonprofits that is seeking a way to more clearly raise funds for the shared mission and its projects, rather than for individual partners, and that can benefit from a third party to help them unify their grant applications and collect donations on the coalition's (or collective's, or cooperative's, or fund's) behalf. That keeps the revenue clear and easy to quantify, while also giving them access to NEW's audit, our support, and our expertise. We also love their mission! It's aligned with ours and deeply connected to NEW's values. Hey folks, Derek here! Many of you know me, and if you've ever been to the space, you've almost certainly met me. As of today, July 24th, I have completed 37 rotations around the sun. By coincidence, July 24th is also the date we signed the lease for Root Access, seven years ago! So Happy Birthday to Root Access! 🎉 🥳 🎂 🎈 The Hackerspace and I are using our birthday as an opportunity for a bit of a fundraiser. We just (barely) paid June's $1,000 PG&E bill, and our July bill will probably hit $1,300. (And this is even after drastically reducing our usage, including severely limiting our use of the A/C and fully shutting down for several days this month. Bleh.) So if anyone is inclined to get us something for our birthday, I would ask that you make a donation to Root Access. Better yet, if you don't have a membership, would you consider grabbing one? We rely on memberships to sustain the space, and that income still isn't quite enough to keep things going long-term. Supporting memberships are just $19/month, with higher tiers for anyone who wants to use the tools and equipment we have.
