I recently had a conversation with an Executive Director who told me she was looking for new major gift donors. “How many donors do you have in your database?” I asked. “About 14,000.” 14,000?! Most Executive Directors would be *thrilled* to have 14,000 donors in their database. And these weren’t just names and addresses she was talking about. These were actual donors. If that’s your situation, then you’ve got major gift donors right at your fingertips. The key is to find them and cultivate them. Appropriately and persistently and unapologetically. Don't overlook the power of a simple table to find valuable anomalies. That's how I recently helped a small nonprofit secure a 6-figure donation from someone who was already in their database...yet had gone overlooked. The process was simple. I created a table where one column listed the median household income by ZIP. Another column listed actual salary data for each record. If salary significantly exceeds the median household income, it may mean that person lives beneath his/her means and therefore has discretionary income. Additional research can confirm this. That was the case for this nonprofit. This donor had been in their database for years. ⭐World Book Day – UK ⭐ The rest of the world celebrates World Book Day on 23 April, which is St George’s Day in England. However, that’s not the reason the UK has chosen a different date 🤔 Apparently, it’s because it would clash with the Easter school holidays (although it doesn’t this year). If you have young children, you may have helped them to dress up in their favourite book character and read stories together. Having grown-up children, I didn’t know it was World Book Day until today, and I still want to celebrate it because I love reading which continues to make a difference in my life. I also love the World Book Day charity mission “to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.” Because “Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.” This is why they work with publishers and fundraise to provide books – from early years to teens - at £1 each. Work in #nonprofit? Ever been a #donor? Read this: The stats are out there showing that #donorfatigue is real. Giving USA reported that last year for only the 4th time in 40 years total giving by U.S. corporations, foundations and individuals declined. And it makes sense... rising costs of childcare, housing, and a shifting landscape of inflation can make a ton of us (myself included) feel the pinch as we show up for our families. #Generosity is hard to share when we are each feeling the impact in our own bank accounts. So what about #Minnesotans? I have always loved the tradition of GiveMN's #givetothemaxday. There has always been something special about a 🎉 CELEBRATION 🎉 of giving across the state and showing up with community pride (uff-da). But often this day can fall on the backburner for many under the belief that a small one time donation won't make that much of a difference. But I want to you to hear me when I say... these $5, $25, or $100 donations are NOT meaningless. They have immense impact for non-profits... giving is declining... but #GTMD23 this coming Thursday is defying the odds and continues to be a life line for many non-profits bottom line.
