Is visibility what most would consider trans-awareness inclusivity to be about? Is that sufficient? ⚓️ I chanced upon Dr. A.J. Lowik’s work through a science/research doomscroll and boy was I excited that it coincided with trans awareness week. In it, Dr. Lowik details their personal journey into what drives their work on inclusive reproductive services. Simply put, how confident are we as doctors, service teams, management, policy wranglers.. in supporting people who may not fall into the options of our binary world? One foundational topic was the respectful manner Dr. Lowik reminded of the chain reaction colonialism (conformity) has had on our systems. 🌍 A Belated Homage to World Indigenous Day: Reflecting on Inclusivity and Cultural Preservation On January 9, 1913, a significant event unfolded in the Otomi town of Ndongu Xiquipilco—a deity, likely Otontecuhtli, the protector god of the Otomi people, was secretly taken from its place of worship. The piece, accompanied by municipal authorities, religious leaders, and a devout group of Catholics, was moved to Temoaya and then to Mexico City. Sadly, like many indigenous artifacts, it was lost, likely stored away and forgotten, a silent testimony to the marginalization of Indigenous cultures. This story is a stark reminder of the long history of cultural erasure and the neglect of Indigenous heritage. As we reflect on World Indigenous Day, we must acknowledge that we are still far behind in fostering an inclusive approach that truly respects and uplifts Indigenous communities. In the humanitarian sector, we have a responsibility to do better. Our work should not just include Indigenous peoples as beneficiaries but should actively involve them in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected. We must seek more inclusive approaches in all our interventions, striving to co-create a future that honors and preserves Indigenous cultures and knowledge. As we continue our work, we should commit to learning from the past and making tangible efforts to support and empower Indigenous communities in a meaningful and respectful way. #IndigenousRights #CulturalPreservation #HumanitarianAction #WorldIndigenousDay

The survey is aimed at three types of respondents: 1) craftspeople 2) curators and owners of cultural / built heritage and heritage architects 3) schools or organisations teaching crafts The results of this survey will serve as a basis for future policy recommendations and to further advocate for the valorisation and protection of traditional heritage crafts. Over the past several decades, #IndigenousPeoples have been advocating for the return of sacred objects, ancestral remains and other cultural items in museums as part of a global movement. Cultural institutions are increasingly open to consulting with Indigenous Peoples and respecting their wishes regarding the return of cultural and often sacred items. Whether stolen, dispossessed or acquired by taking advantage of the systemic structures of colonization, return is a necessary step in redressing historical injustices and building more equitable relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. International standards such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (#UNDRIP) underscore the importance of respecting the right of Indigenous Peoples to preserve, control and manage their own cultural heritage for future generations. Current debates about museum devolution have their origins in Indigenous Peoples' claims for over forty years. While consulting the #DOCIP database and analyzing some sources with the software NVIVO, I am happy to have the good luck to found the following excerpt in a #UnitedNations file (E/CN .4/ 5ub .2/A C .4/ 1983/5) regarding the INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES dating back to 1983: “Indigenous People have the right to reacquire possession of significant cultural artifacts presently in the possession of public or semi-public institutions, where possession of those artifacts was not obtained from the Indigenous People in a just and fair manner or where the artifacts: are of major cultural or religious significance to the Indigenous People…” #EMRIP Docip United Nations Human Rights

🖤💛❤️ Celebrating NAIDOC Week at RED OHMS Group🖤💛❤️ What Aboriginal knowledge can teach us about happiness & wellbeing! Sheree has spent her adult life working in remote Australia, deep in sacred Aboriginal country, where the sky is blue and the earth burnt-orange. She has a deep respect for the Aboriginal communities who live within that landscape, and her current research hopes to answer some profoundly human questions – How do we define success? What makes us happy? And what can we learn from our ancient brothers and sisters.   Creating a unique nexus between drugs, culture and the brain, Sheree Cairney has worked as a Neuroscientist in remote Aboriginal communities for 17 years. Her research has shed light on the transformation of brain and behaviour that happens-with petrol sniffing, alcohol and other drugs-and led to ground-breaking clinical evidence the brain can repair itself if substance abuse stops early enough. She established culturally relevant assessments of brain function, mental health and wellbeing among Aboriginal people, and her research has been translated into interactive multimedia tools that communicate health and education messages to diverse demographics. These include the ‘Brain Stories’ suite of flipcharts and animations and the highly successful ‘No Smokes’ multimedia campaign. She now leads a national longitudinal study on wellbeing in remote Aboriginal communities, ‘The Interplay Project’. A dedicated change-maker, Sheree is passionate about using knowledge, innovation and humour for connection.    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organised by a local community.
