The MWEJN’s work is grounded in the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing. Emerging from grassroots organizing in 1996, the Principles prioritize inclusivity, bottom-up organizing, letting people speak for themselves, working together in solidarity and mutuality, building just relationships, and self-transformation Together, these principles outline how we can operate in ways that are grounded in core values and drive lasting community change.

In 2013, Robert D. Putnam received the National Humanities Medal for his contributions to our understanding of community in America. Today, as we face a loneliness epidemic and increased polarization, his work is more relevant than ever. ➡️Putnam's groundbreaking book, "Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community," explored how our society had become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbors and social structures. Putnam documented how this lack of social capital posed a serious threat to our civic and personal health over twenty years ago. ➡️In "The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again," Putnam and co-author Shaylyn Romney Garrett offered hope using lessons from the past. ➡️The book, "Better Together: Restoring the American Community," by Donald J. Cohen, Lewis M. Feldstein and Robert D.
