I am so proud to be a part of an organization, Steady, that supports these important programs. Want to learn more about Universal Basic Income and the positive impact it can have? Read this article about our work in San Diego County!!
It’s been a privilege to support County of San Diego and Jewish Family Service of San Diego on their unique cash assistance program, which just announced that it has distributed nearly $9 million to more than 2200 families across the county. Research shows that cash assistance can play a transformative role in helping families achieve financial sustainability — and we believe it can play a particularly important role in housing stability. In the coming months, we’ll be evaluating the results of this program and others across the country to contribute to the evidence base around direct cash assistance. Read more at the link below:

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a crucial support system for families, aimed at easing the financial burden of raising children. Currently, the credit is determined based on a family’s income in the current year, leaving them vulnerable to sudden drops in earnings. The proposed ‘lookback’ provision will provide a safety net by allowing families to base their CTC claim on a previous year’s income. This ensures that families continue receiving support during tough times and helps maintain family stability. The ‘lookback’ provision is an important step towards ensuring that all families, particularly those facing unforeseen challenges, have the necessary support. Let’s work towards protecting family stability, no matter what life throws our way. #ChildTaxCredit #FamilyStability #LookbackProvion

Accumulating financial assets allows families to build intergenerational wealth, invest in opportunities like homeownership or education, and weather times of economic distress. Yet, many anti-poverty programs and policies discourage or penalize saving. Families living in subsidized housing are some of the most asset-poor in the US. To help these families build assets and achieve their financial goals, our Nationwide Solutions investee Compass Working Capital works to maximize participation in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program, a transformative but severely underutilized program that allows families living in subsidized housing who increase their earned income to capture what would have been a corresponding rent increase into a protected escrow savings account—which is fully funded by HUD and can be accessed upon graduating the program. Every community in every ZIP code should be a place where people can live their healthiest lives. No matter where you live, everyone should have access to affordable housing, good jobs, clean and safe drinking water, and a thriving local economy. To make this vision a reality, we need a stronger, more equitable community development finance system. At Impact Investments at RWJF, we know that this system is critical for creating opportunity and advancing health equity in communities that historically have been excluded from traditional financing. That’s why we invest across the spectrum of community development finance, from community development financial institutions to credit unions and more, to support the people and businesses that make the places they live a home for themselves and their neighbors. Associate Professor Maynooth Uni. Author 'Gaffs: why no one can get a house'. Host Reboot Republic Podcast
This story was shared with me recently. It shows the devastating human impacts of the housing crisis: "Hey Rory, just thought I'd share my story with you. I'm 35 next week, and am living with my partner’s mother and his siblings in social housing. Unfortunately this isn't by choice. We share a bedroom with my partner’s 20 year old brother, who has autism. It is very difficult for him, let alone us. We are in a 12 year relationship and have no hope to buy, let alone get our own social housing, as we are working, we are over the threshold for social housing but do not earn enough for a mortgage. Furthermore, my fertility time is running out and I am currently starting the prep for IVF in the hospital. I cannot, and will not, miss my opportunity to becoming a mother, which is all I ever desired/need. This government is really pushing people to breaking point. We will eventually have to transform the sitting room into our own room when our miracle arrives. Which only impacts the rest of the family as we will be confined to bedrooms or the kitchen. When my child eventually grows and needs their own space what will happen? Keep up the fantastic work Rory, we need more like you". It's so important we share these stories So that people understand the real life impact of Ireland’s housing disaster. And so we change how people think about housing, to get them to vote, to act, to demand major change Share these stories, share your #housingstories

Have you ever really thought about it? Imagine the pain of being torn away from everything familiar, from the place where laughter once echoed and memories were made. The loss of community and support systems only adds to the sense of dislocation and loneliness. Whether due to forced migration, loss of a family members, or other circumstances beyond their control, the upheaval can leave families feeling vulnerable, isolated, and financially strained. Asylum seeking is not a choice, but the last resort. 🫂In the face of such adversity, we must remember our shared humanity and the inherent right of every individual to find comfort, security, and a place to call home. As compassionate members of society, we have the power to make a difference in the lives of those who have been forced to rebuild from the ground up. 🤝By supporting initiatives like social housing rent to rent, we can provide a lifeline for individuals and families seeking to regain their footing and rebuild their lives. 🤝Together, we can offer hope, stability, and the opportunity for a brighter future for those who have endured the unimaginable. 🌱 **Empowering Our Communities Through Savings Groups** 🌱 Economic development is crucial for everyone in our communities, and Savings Groups are a powerful tool to open up opportunities for members. These groups help restore relationships with God, ourselves, others, and creation, building unity among individuals, churches, and entire communities. Through Savings Groups, people learn money management, provide emotional and social support, and have a safe place to save. This enables them to invest in small projects and diversify their income through F4F and BST. 💪💵 The ministry of Savings Groups inspires and teaches members as they experience the reconciling power of Jesus in all areas of their lives. These groups impact the church and community as people study the Bible, pray, support each other, and save money. Facilitators are essential to this process, helping members share and learn from each other. After the first savings cycle, many individuals and families recognized the impact of these groups. This sparked interest in current members to become facilitators and form new groups. Recently, 8 new facilitators were trained: 2 from El Pajal, 1 from Reforma, 1 from Las Lomas, 2 from Villa Linda, 1 from La Nueva Independencia, and 1 from Vista Hermosa. During the training, participants shared God's word, strengthened relationships, and enhanced their skills, taking an important step toward restoring their lives and those of others in their communities. 🙏🌟 **Quote from Vilma Escobedo (Las Lomas):** "I feel very happy to be part of this training so I can be a savings group facilitator in my community. I am part of a savings group, but I would like to have the capacity to organize savings groups with young people and children who attend the church, to teach them all the values that I have learned in the savings groups." #CommunityEmpowerment #SavingsGroups #EconomicDevelopment #FaithInAction #BuildingUnity #410Bridge
