In its 124-year history, the Labour Party has only ever had four of its leaders take the party out of opposition and into power: MacDonald, Attlee, Wilson and Blair. Keir Starmer is now hoping to become the fifth. But what drives Starmer, how does he operate and what are some of the challenges at home and abroad that could shape his premiership if he wins this year? I've written the snapshot below on how I think he'll fare. https://lnkd.in/efvFe_zN

Very grateful to The London Assembly for inviting me to sit on the panel and provide evidence to the Economy, Culture and Skills Committee this week. The final part of a two-part investigation into care leavers’ access to employment, education and training took place on Wednesday, with an official report due to be commissioned later this year. Care experienced young people are likely to be negatively affected by stigma in the workplace, and a crucial aim of commissioning this report is to be able to demonstrate which interventions have proved successful in supporting care experienced young people at work. It was a pleasure to speak about the partnership between the Drive Forward Foundation and Squire Patton Boggs, and how the partnership has developed over the past year. In particular, how we have been able to provide meaningful support to DFF and their exceptionally talented young people ⭐️

🏆Why We Should Celebrate Coming Second⚽ Last night, England lost the men's Euros final, and the talk everywhere is about the "despair" of yet another missed opportunity and fans “fuming”. There are calls for Gareth Southgate to resign and Harry Kane to retire. But amidst all this negativity, a young schoolboy's voice stood out, saying, "We came 2nd out of all those countries." And he's absolutely right! 🏅 When did we stop celebrating our successes? If our children came second in their class, we'd be proud of their achievement, not criticising them for not coming first. This mindset should translate into the workplace as well. Imagine an environment where even high performers are met with criticism rather than recognition for their achievements. How would that impact morale and motivation? Yes, real underperformance should be addressed, but always with constructive feedback and support before it escalates. But let’s celebrate successes, even if we’re not the best, both on the pitch and in our offices. Recognising achievements and providing balanced feedback is crucial for fostering a positive and productive atmosphere. We came second, and that's something to be proud of! 🌟⚽👏 #EnglandsPride #CelebrateSuccess #WorkplaceMorale #CompanyCulture

Brilliant to hear that longtime Better Business Act coalition member, Virgin, has joined Greene King, Greggs and Timpson in the Fair Chance Business Alliance – promoting the employment of ex-offenders. In both a compassionate and strategic move for businesses, Richard Branson explains how hiring ex-offenders is a win-win – reducing reoffending rates, addressing staff shortages and unlocking a huge pool of untapped talent. Businesses have the power to make real change in society, but mandatory adoption is not enough. We need to see all UK businesses acting as a force for good, working together to tackle the issues society faces. This is why the Better Business Act is calling for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. Join our coalition today. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gBqhbVx

Meet Martin Stewart, the winner of the 2019 Blind Australian of the Year Award. Martin was born blind and in 2002 after an horrific public transport accident lost an arm and a leg. Despite this, Martin through his work as President of the Blind Workers Union reviewed the Victorian Prototype trains, where he systematically went through the train, discovering major faults. Then tenaciously campaigning to have his concerns rectified, including spaces under priority seats for guide dogs, removing obstacle poles in the first and last carriages, increasing the doors’ button audio feedback and what he fought the hardest for a gangway gap creating a more equitable and safe environment for blind or vision impaired people. The core mission of the Blind Australian of the Year Awards is to actively promote the contribution that over half a million people who live with low vision and blindness make to Australian society. Nominations for the 2024 Awards are still open but are closing soon, so make sure you submit your nomination ASAP. Insightful! This aligns closely with my PhD research on the workforce impacts of new technologies in Australian Local Governments. One key finding is the importance of targeted development programs to address skill gaps in councils, particularly regional councils. Happy to share more insights from my research — feel free to reach out!
Last week, we consulted with Local Government NSW (LGNSW), where we explore the unique challenges and opportunities for the Local Government workforces across New South Wales! These insightful discussions focused on developing strategies to support the Local Government industry-sector, including: • the need for targeted training programs to ensure workers meet the evolving skills demands of Local Government roles, • career development opportunities in recruiting and retaining skilled staff, while also ensuring ongoing opportunities for professional growth, • opportunities for advancing the capability of regional, rural and remote Local Government workforces. We are committed to working closely with our key stakeholders to address the specific needs of Local Government, to ensure that the industry is prepared to meet both current and future demands. Thank you to LGNSW for their invaluable time and input, and we look forward to continuing this important work!

Another Unfair Dismissal Case....worth a read Nicholas Flesser v The Trustee for Delroy Marketing Trust & Walker Family Trust On 15 October 2024, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) dismissed Nicholas Flesser’s unfair dismissal application against The Trustee for Delroy Marketing Trust & Walker Family Trust. Flesser claimed his dismissal on 9 September 2024 was unfair, while the respondent argued it was a case of genuine redundancy. The employer raised a jurisdictional objection, stating Flesser’s income exceeded the high-income threshold of $175,000, disqualifying him from unfair dismissal protections under the Fair Work Act 2009. Flesser’s base salary was $180,000 plus incentives and superannuation, and no modern award or enterprise agreement covered his role. Despite directions from the Commission, the applicant failed to submit supporting documentation by the required deadline. Consequently, the Commission determined there was no reasonable prospect of success and dismissed the application due to failure to prosecute. Key Takeaway: Failure to meet procedural deadlines and provide key documentation can result in dismissal of claims, especially when jurisdictional issues such as income thresholds are raised. https://lnkd.in/gNdQNK2b #employment #australia #unfairdismissal #employmentlaw
