Chromosphaera perkinsii is a single-celled species discovered in 2017 in marine sediments around Hawaii 🌊🦠. A team led by Omaya Dudin, PhD Dudin, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science | University of Geneva, has observed that the genetic programs responsible for embryonic development were already present before the emergence of animal life, or that this species evolved independently to develop similar processes 🧬. Nature would therefore have possessed the genetic tools to “create eggs” long before it “invented chickens”. 🥚🐔 More info here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dEWYdmpe This study is published in the journal "Nature". #Research #Science #UNIGE

Only 10 Australian marsupials have had their genomes mapped — and today, the critically endangered Greater bilby joined that list 🧬 Published in Nature Portfolio, the impact of this important research is twofold: 🤝 The data can inform future breeding and conservation efforts, by helping to select genetically diverse individuals to release into sanctuaries 🔬 It opens up exciting new avenues of genetic research For renowned evolutionary geneticist Professor Jenny Graves — a co-author on this landmark study — it’s the unique behaviour of the marsupial’s sex chromosomes which will provide significant value to science. Studying the chromosomes will provide ‘more insight into how genes switch on and off in animals,’ she says, and shed more light into the evolutionary peculiarities of the X and Y chromosomes — the building blocks of life. ‘What happens is that one of the (bilby) sex chromosomes fuses with another sex chromosome and that creates mayhem,’ says Prof Graves. The result of that mayhem is a species that has evolved to survive in the most arid areas of the country—without drinking water—performing a vital role in the desert ecosystem as an (undeniably cute) digging machine. New world record alert! The South American lungfish is now the largest animal genome sequenced to date! Often, people think that the size of the genome of the species is correlated with the size of the species, but it is not as this animal is actually very small. According to a new study published in Nature Portfolio, it is also the closest living relative to the first four-legged creatures which are the ancestors of all vertebrates, and “among fish, lungfish are the closest relatives to humans.” Our team of #DNA and #genomic enthusiasts, dare we say self proclaimed nerds, hope you find this as fascinating as we do :) Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/eimRXZtP #Genomics #fish #science #research #biodiversity #Genetics
