July is Disability Pride Month. Join us in championing inclusivity and amplifying voices that inspire change. With a core value of belonging, it matters greatly to us at UH that every member of our team knows they’re valued and that their contributions and voices are important to us. We continue to shape an encouraging and caring culture where all feel they can belong. One way we do this is through our membership in Disability:IN Ohio, a network that provides employers with networking opportunities, education, and resources geared toward increasing understanding and awareness in the workplace. We’re honored to be a part of this group and a multi-year recipient of the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) Employer Partners of Inclusion Award. As we take this day to better understand the challenges that face people with disabilities, we invite you to join us in helping to create a world where all people have equal opportunities for work, play, health, and success.

People with disabilities are still hugely undervalued by society, but with technology becoming a tremendous leveller, there is no better time to start listening to their unique perspectives, and to start bringing more of these perspectives into our talent pools July is Disability pride month, and you may have noticed the stripes on my profile picture The colours represent: • Green for sensory disabilities. • Blue psychiatric disabilities. • White non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities. • Gold for neurodiversity. • Red represents physical disabilities. It's design is to prevent strobing on screen and muted and in order to assist those with visual impairment. Perhaps time for companies to consider updating their logos in July to show support for the most vulnerable in our societies #disabilitypride

We are proud to celebrate and recognize Disability Pride Month! It's a poignant reminder that valuing difference and leading with inclusion and belonging are principles that we all must reaffirm and remain committed to. And while the community in the United States has made much progress since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), there is more work to be done. Data from the Center for Research on Disability shows that "the labor force participation rate for people with disabilities sits at 32.8%; compared to 77.1% for those without disabilities." Our businesses, communities, and society cannot afford to lose on the talent, experience, and unique perspective that people with disabilities bring. Today, and everyday, we must ensure our workplaces are accessible and inclusive. We must ensure our workplace cultures lead with belonging so people with disabilities can show up to work as their authentic selves and thrive. For those asking how I can be an ally to the community, we strongly encourage you to follow your intellectual curiosity, seek knowledge, do your own research, and build empathy. A great place to start is by following organizations like Disability:IN which is leading the way in disability inclusion in the workplace. #BusinessOfBelonging

Many top organizations need to be reminded of this Act. It is sickening and disturbing how so many talented individuals are often discriminated against on the basis of a disability. Just because someone may have a disability, doesn’t make them incompetent or unable to work. Sometimes they are even working around the clock because of strong work ethics instilled upon them as a birthright. Many of them are often over-qualified for positions even, and end up having to settle for work that doesn’t meet their career growth needs in departments who are unfortunately less than supportive of continuing education and supporting new hires to continue climbing the professional ladder. Sometimes it is just a matter of finding the right position for the person to work at within the organization other than what they were initially hired for, since disabled people are often subjected to lateral violence within the workforce and may need additional protections to protect an organization’s initial investment. Disabled people may actually be more than able to do certain tasks that others who are seemingly more well-equipped to complete can’t even wrap their minds around. I have found in my work and life experiences that disabled people may actually possess hidden gifts and talents that others don’t possess. It is time to stop and end this cycle of abuse upon the disabled once and for all. 🙏🏻💜 You want to fix the nurse shortages? Then get it together already and stop running talented older nurses, who have a wealth of wisdom and knowledge to share within the field of nursing, away from the profession. You must make room for them at the table, with or without advanced degrees.
July marks Disability Pride Month, honoring the 1990 enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and embracing the diverse journeys of America’s largest minority group. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination by a covered entity (any employer, employment agency, labor organization, or joint labor-management committee) against any qualified individual with a disability in job application procedures, hiring or discharge, compensation, advancement, training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. Globally, over one billion individuals live with disabilities, encompassing a diverse spectrum of generations, races, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and socio-economic statuses. It is inherent that they aspire to and merit equal inclusion within society, including in the realm of digital interactions. As members of society, we bear a collective responsibility to enhance our world and promote inclusivity. By embracing and honoring the diverse backgrounds of individuals with disabilities, we can unite through shared experiences. Let's establish fairness and equality universally, both in physical and digital spaces. This embodies the spirit of Disability Pride Awareness Month. July is Disability Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring the strength, resilience, and unique identities of individuals with disabilities. For Shane, a public relations manager, celebrating this month is not just about personal reflection but also about fostering community and promoting understanding. "In my experience, recognizing Disability Pride Month and talking about how we’re differently abled can help others feel less alone. "When I hear people talking about having Tourette’s or a stutter like me, I feel this sense of camaraderie from the shared experience. Since I’m usually the only one in my professional and friend groups with tics, remembering there are others like me is super helpful." Shane's journey emphasizes the significance of visibility and community in embracing one's disability. "I recommend that anyone struggling to embrace their own disability to find a community of others who share a similar experience. Companies like State Farm, for example, have great employee resource groups. If you feel alone, resources like that can make you feel less so." As Disability Pride Month draws to a close, we’d like to take a moment to give a shout of support to all our Rain Makers and friends with visible and hidden disabilities who bring so much to our community through divergent thought, approach and ideation. During Disability Pride Month we honor people with disabilities who are increasingly stepping forward to claim their full identity, and celebrate the unique and varied perspectives brought by people who have diversity of experience. Disability Pride Month, celebrated during July since 2015, marks 34 years since passage of the Americans With Disabilities (ADA) act. The ADA threw open doors of accessibility and change in our country, eliminating physical and social barriers to the inclusion of people with disabilities into the workforce and social fabric of our society. Though so much has changed in the last 34 years, we still find barriers for those who experience the world differently, either from physical limitations or neuro-diversity. We will continue to work together as a Rain Maker community to break down these barriers and improve access for all.
