Congratulations to Daniel Wälchli, co-founder of our affiliated startup Manukai AG, for being selected for the BRIDGE Proof of Concept Fellowship! The startup was co-founded by Prof. Torbjørn Netland, a member of the ETH AI Center Associated Faculty. Manukai AG specializes in advanced manufacturing solutions with its flagship product, the CAM Copilot, streamlining the CNC machining process. This innovative tool optimizes CAD design conversion into machine instructions, drastically reducing programming times by up to 80%, decreasing tool wear, and enhancing production quality and speed. Through its software platform, Manukai AG simplifies data processing from shop floor devices, offering seamless integration to improve efficiency without altering existing systems. The kick-off meeting for CoARA Boost marked an inspiring start to a three-year project, setting the stage for a promising collaboration ahead in furthering the mission of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). BRIDGE Programm (SNSF-Innosuisse) Discovery projects help to turn research into applications for the economy and society. 💪❗ This is the conclusion of an external evaluation commissioned by the SNSF Swiss National Science Foundation and Innosuisse and carried out by the research institute KMU Forschung Austria in Vienna. The evaluation concludes that: 👉 All projects have taken significant steps towards potential applications thanks to the public funding they received. 👉 Almost all completed projects are being continued. 👉 Without the funding, most of the projects evaluated would not have been carried out - or would have been carried out to a much lesser extent. The BRIDGE Discovery instrument meets expectations in terms of its funding objectives. The instrument is clearly positioned between the two funding portfolios of the SNSF and Innosuisse. OSCARS is a four-year EU-funded project that will foster the uptake of Open Science in Europe by consolidating the achievements of world-class European research infrastructures in the ESFRI roadmap and beyond into lasting interdisciplinary FAIR data services and working practices. The project has been granted ~25M EUR funding in the framework of the EC Horizon Europe call HORIZON-INFRA-2023-EOSC-01-01, under grant agreement no. 101129751, and will officially start on the 1st of January 2024. By bringing together world-class European RIs in the ESFRI roadmap and beyond, and building on the results achieved in the EOSC projects funded under the Horizon 2020 programme to achieve a greater FAIRness of science - ENVRI-FAIR (ENVRI community for environmental sciences), EOSC-Life (life sciences), ESCAPE (astronomy and particle physics), PaNOSC (neutron and light source science) and SSHOC - Social Sciences and Humanities Open Cloud - OSCARS will strengthen the role of the Science Clusters in the ERA: it will develop domain-based Competence Centres and will foster the implementation of Open Science projects funded through a cascading grant mechanism. Hello everyone! I won a grant to start a major new research project on the geopolitics of cloud computing. Thank you to everyone who has advised me on this topic. With this and other grants I'm building up a new multidisciplinary research group on technology geopolitics. Towards the end of the year I'll start advertising postdoc and doctoral researcher positions for political economists, computer scientists, and related scholars interested in these topics. ERC Advanced Grant 2023 GEOCLOUD: The Geopolitics of Cloud Computing: How State-Firm Interactions Shape the Geography of Computation to Produce Digital Sovereignty and Dependence Abstract: Today’s digital superpowers, the United States and China, exploit other countries’ reliance on their digital infrastructures for foreign policy and national security advantage. Governments in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere try to navigate this great power competition to retain “digital sovereignty”. A pivotal moment in these technology geopolitics is the ongoing “shift to cloud”. Instead of data being stored and processed on users’ own devices and on servers situated at organizations’ own premises, storage and processing are increasingly moving into “hyperscale” cloud data centres dotted around the world. This concentration generates significant economies of scale, decreases capital costs for firms and public sector organizations, and improves energy efficiency. However, it also creates new systemic risks, and since most of these data centres belong to U.S. and Chinese technology giants, will dramatically deepen other states’ technological dependence on them—unless smaller states succeed in shaping the shift to their advantage. In the GEOCLOUD project we will for the first time map this changing geography of computation and examine how different states are attempting to shape it with policies. Focusing on the digital superpowers’ key battlegrounds of Northern Europe and East/Southeast Asia, we will develop ways of measuring on a country level how exposed public sector and financial sector digital services are to cloud providers and how this exposure is evolving over time. We will use statistical analyses and interviews with policy makers and cloud executives to assess how effective government policies have been at shaping this exposure and at influencing the ownership and locations of hyperscale data centres. We will moreover theorize how government policies are interacting with large technology firms’ business strategies to generate new geopolitical dynamics that shape this geography of computation—and with it our prospects of digital sovereignty and dependence. 2.9% of Tri-Council funding goes to Colleges. Colleges and Institutes in Canada are an un-tapped resource for applied research and key to addressing the challenges related to productivity which are facing the Canadian economy. Research work done at Colleges is closely tied to community benefit. That can be industry related, but in the case of my own research, it can also be focused directly on social issues. Let's hope that the Tri-Council funding agencies recognize the systemic barriers to supporting research at Colleges and work with us to encourage the innovation that we and our students bring to our communities.
