The most beautiful and livable place I have been to is Perth, Australia. A city with black swons, tolerant people, where orchids are grown and a particular local charm is cultivated. Such places are increasingly rare in the world. Universities should be established only in such places. Not among icky, thorny characters full of ambition and a poorly managed surplus of aggression, active or passive. Universities should be communities of healing, not of conflict and competition. Learning is only possible in peace. "Intellectual ambition" is merely another name for corporate zeal that is misplaced in the institutions of learning. It is thus no wonder that universities are becoming corporatized to intolerable levels. Universities should be like monasteries. Calm, aesthetically and morally pleasing. Soothing, comforting and emotionally and intellectually inviting. And they used to be that way.

Happy International Day of Education! The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as International Day of Education, and today is the 6th annual celebration. On this day, let us celebrate the power of education to create pathways that propel all people forward. Our community has students who are starting behind and staying behind, making it difficult to get on the path toward a high-paying job. We know a post-secondary credential leads to higher earnings, and two-thirds of high-demand careers in the future will require one. We work with our community partners to increase the percentage of students graduating from high school who are prepared for college or career, as well as increase the percentage of people who earn a post-secondary credential. #InternationalDayofEducation #collegeorcareerready #postsecondarycredential #advanceandthrive

—Scholarship Announcement— https://lnkd.in/gyHGmqXq Before the end of the year, and as my last post of the year, I’d like to announce our new Indigenous scholarship. The scholarship is to promote financial and business literacy and education for First Nations students, in particular those who may go on to be involved in a native title RNTBC. A lack of financial and business literacy in this area of activity is negatively affecting a number of outcomes, and is not limited to First Nations groups themselves but also affects Government agencies and regulatory engagement, as there is also a significant lack of understanding at a public policy level (translation: government activity in this space often does not understand the economics). Most immediately, however, it negatively affects the negotiation outcomes that native title groups achieve when negotiating with businesses for land access — this is something that my team and I have had to deal with often. It can often mean that companies make tens of millions of dollars (or more) off native title land whereas the native title property holders get well below the appropriate commercial value. There will be more on this next year, as we seek to transition the scholarship into a permanent bequest (and change its name — which was named by the University, not myself). However, before the year is out, I’d like to quickly profile this scholarship and bring it to the attention of potential recipients. Please like and refer this post around so that potential students are aware of the scholarship (let’s hope one student has a very happy new year). And please have a safe and happy end of the year. I am very proud to end the year on this post.

We need more than intentions or targets to improve Indigenous student participation in university. There is so much debate and policy discussions to improve Indigenous participation through uncapped places for all Indigenous Australians, irrespective of their postcode. But this is not the first time there have been plans to boost Indigenous enrolment at university. Preparing Indigenous Australian students for university needs to involve recognising and valuing different pathways into higher education. This should include recognising work experience and preparatory programs and participation in pre-university experiences and courses. It also needs to include mentorships, career counselling and work experience in high school. Once students are enrolled, universities need to provide support to Indigenous students throughout their studies. Like including culturally responsive approaches to teaching, access to support services, and nurturing a sense of belonging on campus. Policy changes are only one small part of a larger picture. The whole education sector needs to do more. #education #highered #inclusion

Once upon a time in the Western world, the typical university student was a recent high school graduate, eager to experience the traditional campus life. However, the landscape of higher education has been undergoing a remarkable transformation. You may find yourself in a classroom where the person sitting next to you might be a parent, an adult international student - or someone else with a decade of work experience under their belt. As of 2020, 37% of college students are over the age of 25. This is the new face of higher education, where non-traditional students are becoming the norm rather than the exception. In this blog post, we'll explore strategies for people with non-traditional academic backgrounds who are thinking about going back to graduate school. Tip #5: Build a Strong Network of Support The admissions or international student office and orientation programs can help with the transition to university life abroad. New friends, academic advisors, counselors, and campus clubs also provide support. Counselors can help reduce stress from moving and adjusting to a new culture. Involvement in campus life helps build a support network and integrate into the school community. 💙🫶
