The City of Greenville is kicking off public meetings today to review proposed changes to the Development Code. City staff are sharing the proposed amendments for their first annual review of the code, which came after 12 months of practical use and listening to feedback from residents, developers and stakeholders. The updates include changes that will streamline review processes and right-size the development standards for Greenville, including easing development requirements for new businesses, residential building setbacks, campus master plans and sign ordinances, among others. Ten at the Top, one of our partners working to address key cross-jurisdictional issues, challenges and opportunities in the Upstate region, is hosting their biannual Upstate Summit on September 11. A recent economic report shows Medicaid expansion could create a significant economic boost in Greenville County. The report, conducted by George Washington University, projects over 2,521 new jobs and an additional $10.5 million in state and local taxes by 2026. This economic impact extends beyond healthcare, with one-third of new jobs expected in construction, retail, manufacturing, and more. Medicaid expansion has the potential to create over 10,000 new jobs across South Carolina in various sectors. Greenville County Council voted last week to have a Penny Sales Tax referendum on the ballot, meaning voters in November can decide whether to add a 1% sales tax to retail purchases in the County. Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce has released a new The Future of Good Jobs: Projections through 2031 report. The report shows that the future of good jobs in the United States looks promising with good job as one that pays, nationally, a minimum of $43,000 to workers ages 25–44 and a minimum of $55,000 to workers ages 45–64, with a median of $82,000 for all good jobs. To help workers make decisions that maximize their likelihood of securing a good job, the authors introduce the concept of promising occupations for workers on each educational pathway, in which more than half of jobs in the occupational group are projected to be good for workers on a given educational pathway in 2031 and the occupational group will employ a higher share of workers on a specific educational pathway than will the overall economy in. The report describes good jobs in 2031 for workers ages 25–64 by 22 occupational groups and three educational pathways (bachelor’s degree, middle skills, and high school). The report finds that while there will be good jobs on every educational pathway in 2031, only 15% will be available to workers on the high school pathway, compared to 66% on the bachelor’s degree pathway and 19% on the middle-skills pathway. People living in South Carolina are invited to participate in a survey to have their opinions considered in creating the state’s Department of Transportation’s 2050 statewide multimodal transportation plan (SMTP) Momentum 2050: Moving South Carolina Forward initiative.
