Halting biodiversity loss is important for our future as a species. In the long term, avoiding extinctions and co-extinctions is important for our well-being, given that we are a part of nature. Check out 5⃣ elements of accelerating species extinctions: https://lnkd.in/eGUBCaZj

Adopting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was a significant milestone in our efforts to halt and reverse nature loss. It provided a crucial roadmap that guide us in protecting and restoring biodiversity globally. Biodiversity plays a vital role in maintaining the health and stability of our ecosystems. It provides us with essential resources and contributes to climate regulation and sustainable development. Preserving biodiversity is a moral imperative and critical for our well-being. We can contribute to this cause by taking small steps in our everyday lives. Whether it's supporting local conservation initiatives, reducing our ecological footprint, or spreading awareness about the importance of biodiversity, every action counts. We must stay informed and educated about the challenges we face, which makes following UN Biodiversity a great way to learn more about this biodiversity plan. Let's continue to advocate for preserving and restoring biodiversity, ensuring a sustainable and resilient planet for future generations. #BiodiversityPlan #NatureConservation #GlobalCooperation

#CMSCOP14 | Wetlands are central to human survival and home to 40% of the world’s biodiversity, yet about 87% of wetlands have been lost globally in the last 300 years and 54% since 1900. This transformation is undermining the ecological functions of the remaining habitat by preventing free movement of species and promoting biodiversity loss. As they continue to be degraded the essential ecosystem services they provide to people and species diminish. ➡ https://lnkd.in/ePDwYPnt #WetlandConservation #WetlandsMatter

Biodiversity can be defined as the variety and abundance of life in a particular locality or on Earth as a whole. Marine biodiversity refers to the number of distinct species and their abundance in the world’s oceans. So how does marine biodiversity compare with biodiversity on land? Turns out it depends on what you’re counting.

Protecting biodiversity is crucial. Nature and wildlife are intrinsically valuable, and we don't need external reasons to protect our planet and its inhabitants. But regardless of whether or not we need those external reasons, they exist! In fact, dwindling biodiversity can have a direct impact on public health. A recent report in Nature found that biodiversity "was associated with a 65% greater increase in disease than invasive species and a 111% greater increase than climate change." Biodiversity loss leads to disease because it can shift the abundance of disease-carrying species. When rarer species disappear, more common species are left behind, and parasites tend to target them instead.
