The VisitEngland Attractions Survey has reported an 11% increase nationally in the volume of total visits from 2022 to 2023 🥳 However this is still 28% below 2019 levels. Overall, the region's attractions reported an increase of over a quarter of a million visitors, with attractions averaging 7% more visitors than in 2022. Top attractions in our region who've submitted their visitor numbers for 2023 include Beamish Museum (ranked 17th nationally!), Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and National Trust properties Cragside and Gibside. Locomotion, the National Railway Museum's site in Shildon reported a whopping 60% increase over 2022's numbers as it opens its new exhibition hall and expanded collection this year! Oxford University Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM) experienced a large increase in visitors in 2023, according to figures released during English Tourism Week today by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), welcoming over 3.2 million visitors in 2023 compared to 2.7 million visitors in 2022. This is a 20% increase from the previous year and just above the average increase of 19% across all ALVA attractions, with three GLAM sites appearing in ALVA’s list of the UK’s top 50 attractions of 2023!
