Inovus Medical, in extending your invition for discussion, recent research findings on simulation-based training for surgical skills acquisition (https://bit.ly/3JKPYiI) align with the importance of emotional connection in the use of VR study (Crescent Jicol). Surgical work is implicitly emotional, not just in how surgeons connect with their objectives but because it is by nature a shared negotiation of activity. While visual fidelity and technical prowess are important factors, surgical simulation work in shared decision making activity suggests that social fidelity - the accurate representation of the social context and interactions within the simulated environment - is equally crucial for enabling meaningful learning, skills transfer, and development of expertise. Clinical decisions are never made value-free and devoid of human connection, so simulation cannot disregard this crucial aspect of design. Linking again to current findings, simulation must be recogniseable to trainees, allowing them to simulate reality in their social imagination. Far from being a soft skill, this social and semiotic process of meaning-making is central to how trainees consolidate their learning and develop their surgical identity and agency. Just as this VR study finds the importance of evoking emotions like fear, happiness, and agency, social exchanges, language, and collaborative problem-solving between trainees in simulation exercises are key to their emotional investment and ability to translate skills to the operating theatre. Simulation is therefore not just a neutral testing ground, but a space where trainees negotiate shared understanding and acculturation to the surgical community of practice. Furthermore, the level of trainee experience within a simulated activity plays a significant role in how they leverage the social interactions to co-construct knowledge. Pairing experienced and inexperienced trainees together can enhance this social learning process and improve outcomes. This further supports the notion that technical fidelity alone is insufficient - the social dynamics and scaffolding of the simulation experience are crucial . This VR study rightly highlights the importance of emotional connection. This emotional engagement is deeply intertwined with the social and semiotic processes occurring within the simulated environment. The system is called Miniature Rodent Stereo Illumination VR (#iMRSIV).
