🌵 Wonk Week Session Spotlight 🌵 Join us for Beyond Stakeholder Management: How Polarization is Reshaping Public Affairs, featuring Ben Schroeter, Director of Global Economic Policy & Strategic Engagement at Booking.com, and Matthis Kaiser, Partner, FGS Global. In today's polarized world, consumer decisions are more than just personal—they're political. Companies must either embrace this dynamic or risk being left in the dust. Ben and Matthis will explore how public affairs can harness the power of polarization, guiding businesses to enter new markets, out maneuver competitors, and create a sustainable edge. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn how your company can leverage polarization for growth. 🤠 Check out the full Wonk Week agenda and register here: https://bit.ly/3ZncQh0

I gave some comments yesterday for this article on the announcement that the Wellington Science City project as well as the Te Ara Paerangi research sector reforms will not be going ahead under our new government (apparently out of paywall now). As said in the article, my biggest concern about this is the lack of direction for our research and science system. The key issue is of course a massive lack of funding - it was pointed out this week in another article by Peter Griffin that we are now spending less on science and innovation than we were eight years ago, and of course we are well below the oft-stated target of 2% of GDP. Te Ara Paerangi did not seek to address this directly (i.e., we were never promised significant funding increases!) but it did do an outstanding job of engaging the research and science community and making people feel heard, and full credit to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment team for that process. This made many of us hopeful that as we worked through it, including the setting of National Research Priorities, we would be able to build a well-supported case both for increased, appropriately targeted funding and the systemic changes that would set our research and science system up to do the critical work Aotearoa New Zealand needs and that can only be done here. Nobody else knows our environment, our people, and our industries like our own researchers do. Wellington Science City was not an investment in people (which is what I personally want to see most) but it was an investment in getting our institutions to collaborate more effectively, which the TAP process also identified as a major issue within the sector. To have both projects cancelled with no way forward leaves many of us wondering: if not there, then where do we go next? Can we even retain the expertise and infrastructure we have right now? We now know what the government *isn't* doing for research and science (and it must be said that no government has really excelled at supporting the sector in the last few decades). We're all waiting to find out what it *will* do.

I'm heading into town for the inaugural roundtable of the Nature Market Dialogue, The Broadway Initiative project to bring all the voices together to build unity and consensus. First up, market governance. Land-based and farming friends, what would you be hoping would be discussed? This roundtable is the start of a process. There will be working groups, workshops, consultations. There will be other workstreams besides governance. Everyone's voice should have a chance to be heard, head here if you want to share a view: https://lnkd.in/eeXEezQ2

"Gen Z is entering the workforce and beginning to level up in a very different world from past generations. Many graduated during the pandemic lockdowns and then began working in a remote or hybrid capacity – meaning their onboarding and socialization has been rough at best. So, they have none of the context, but all of the pressure and 10x the technology many of your readers did when joining the workforce. "But let’s be clear, Gen Z doesn’t want your beliefs, affirmations or, condemnations we want your impact. This doesn’t mean employers are responsible for solving all of the world’s social problems, but it does mean that employers must be in tune with the issues and opportunities adjacent to their industry or workforce, and then co-create solutions with passionate young employees to make positive change. We aren’t looking for you to save the world, but we do expect you to help solve the pressing issues in your world." Super excited to be featured in Seton Hall University's In The Lead Magazine, focused on multigenerational workplaces. 👨💻 Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gYi9wNKB

💪 Making working conditions in the digital economy better: Fairwork Wrapped 2023 🕹 🖱 Digital labour platforms provide important income opportunities for millions of people all over the world. Most platform workers, however, are either not protected by existing employment law or collective bodies. Consequently, platform workers often face low wages and precarity as well as poor and dangerous working conditions. ⚖ Because of this, the Fairwork Project, based at the WZB and the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, is dedicated to the research and evaluation of working conditions on digital platforms. It developed five principles for fair work in the platform economy: fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, fair representation. Fairwork's Wrapped 2023 shows that within the last year, they were able to help companies 134 policy changes benefitting workers. 👇 DIW Berlin - German Institute for Economic Research Martin Krzywdzinski Weizenbaum-Institut Mark Graham Patrick Feuerstein Pablo Agüera Reneses Giulia Varaschin Tobias Kuttler #Digitalization #GigEconomy #PlatformEconomy
