A fascinating report by UK Business Climate Hub, Planet Mark and The Broadway Initiative on the common trends and challenges that UK SMEs face when tackling net zero. I personally found it interesting to see that businesses with a dedicated sustainability professional were 17% more likely to have set a net zero target and have realistic timelines for achieving their goals. None of the sustainability professionals surveyed listed a <2024 net zero target and only 2% had targets aiming for net zero by 2029 which suggests that having a sustainability professional increases understanding of the scale and complexity involved in achieving net zero - underscoring the critical role of sustainability professionals and organisation-wide education on what achieving net zero means. At Clockwise, our targets are realistic and measured and we prioritise sustainability training for all colleagues, with various educational sessions taking place throughout the year for colleagues to attend. Alongside our training resources, we have the Green Champions committee which has at least one Clockwise colleague in each of our 17 UK and EU locations who feed into our ESG goals and act as a sustainability champion on behalf of their location team. #netzero #Sustainability #BusinessInsights #ClimateAction #UKBusiness #WorkClockwise

Today Broadway Initiative and Planet Mark unveil the Net Zero Census report, and you can download your copy by heading to the link in the comments below. The Census is delivered by the UK Business Climate Hub coalition, managed by Broadway, in partnership with Planet Mark, and analyses the experiences and opinions of over 2000 businesses grappling with the path to #netzero. The transition to clean power and a zero-carbon future is both an environmental imperative and an economic opportunity. #SMEs are well- placed to capture the economic benefits of the #lowcarbon revolution, through developing solutions needed across the economy and accessing new markets globally. But we need to make #decarbonisation action straightforward and accessible. Broadway has worked with the whole #UKbusiness and finance community, including through leading trade associations and with the Government, to create the UK Business Climate Hub, the UK’s net zero portal for authoritative, free to access #businessadvice on energy efficiency and decarbonisation. UK Business Climate Hub is at the heart of the joined-up support framework for SMEs that we and our partners want to create. To make these frameworks effective we need to understand the SME perspective, and how it is evolving. That’s why Broadway partnered with Planet Mark to create the #NetZeroCensus. The Census is the first research on SME net zero engagement to be done at such a large scale, with such a wide range of partners. We plan to build on the Census capability to monitor trends annually, yet this first set of results is already shedding new light on issues such as net zero #supplychain requirements. Follow the link in the comments to head over to UK Business Climate Hub and download your copy of the report. You can also register for the Net Zero Census webinar, where we will be unpacking what we have learned about the state of SME decarbonisation from over 2000 business responses.

This is a welcome announcement from Steve Reed and his team. The existing EIP was a missed opportunity to engage the wider business community in the vital task of restoring our natural environment. We’ve been calling for an approach that clarifies how different business sectors need to contribute to meeting the targets and what individual firms should prioritise. The review announced today opens up the chance to get this right and galvanise business action on nature – we look forward to working with Ministers to make this happen. https://lnkd.in/eymMNddy

The UK Nature Markets Dialogue is building a coalition of experts from the finance, business, farming and environment sectors to build a consensus arounf the future of high integrity nature markets. The NMD aims to: • Influence the forthcoming Defra review of nature market governance • Develop and articulate new thinking on nature market demand-side drivers: specifically how business sector net zero plans could be reworked to contribute to the Environmental Improvement Plan and associated implications for medium term policy • Create a cross-party consensus on the nature market agenda: this will help ensure policy continuity where needed across the transition to a new Parliament These priorities reflect the conclusions (pp32-33) of Broadway’s report State of UK nature markets 2023. Each priority will be explored in a specific workstream of the Dialogue, with the Steering Group maintaining an overview of the project as a whole. The Steering Group reflects the NMD ethos of building consensus by assembling diverse expertise. We are grateful to all the members for offering their time and experience: Peter Young (Chair), The Broadway Initiative Helen Avery, Green Finance Institute Richard Benwell, Wildlife and Countryside Link Balwinder Dhoot, The Food and Drink Federation Rosie Hails, National Trust Judicaelle Hammond, The CLA (Country Land & Business Association) Rohit Kaushish, NFU (National Farmers' Union) Emily Norton, Environmental Markets Board Mark Reed, SRUC George Sethia, BSI Rachel Solomon Williams, Aldersgate Group James Stevens, Home Builders Federation Daniel Walker-Nolan, Water UK David Young, The Broadway Initiative Liam McAleese (observer), Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Liam Stokes, Director of Nature at Broadway Initiative, will act as Secretary to the Steering Group.
