June is Pride Month, a global celebration of the history, resilience, and achievements of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Inclusion for everybody is something the UPPER project has been approaching comprehensively, also taking into account gender and sexuality and the resulting experiences of public transport. "The 'Mobility as a Right concept' is one of the pillars of the UPPER project. A strategic vision aiming at defining inclusive mobility where all citizens are taken into consideration, regardless of their capacities or their status in society. We truly believe cities must provide inclusive and safe public transport for all" – Francesco Iacorossi, UPPER’s Dissemination Task Leader and Project Coordinator at Eurocities Last year along with project partner POLIS Network we reflected on some of the recent progress, challenges remaining, and the need for open and honest dialogue. True to the spirit of Pride Month, Polis is again focusing on the barriers to queer-inclusive mobility, the best practices, and the importance of addressing the 'queer deficit' in mobility planning. We are happy to be part of it through this new campaign 'POLIS x Pride 2024: Safe by design' UPPER Living Lab Roma Capitale through its public transport operator ATAC SpA has also launched a local campaign to celebrate Pride month branding with the pride flag's colours on an entire train of the metro A line. I've had this conversation time and time again about the importance of integrating cultural knowledge and lived experience into the strategic direction of our organisations. There's a significant gap when our voices are not heard, and our perspectives are not considered. If First Nations voices are not seen, listened to, or taken into account, how can you truly know what you are doing? Our unique insights are crucial for developing and implementing strategies that are inclusive and effective. Without our input, the impact of your decisions may not fully address the needs and realities of our communities. Representation goes beyond just having a seat at the table; it means actively listening and valuing the advice and experiences of First Nations people. On May 21, we celebrate German Diversity Day, and I want to take this opportunity to highlight the often-unseen efforts toward diversity and integration. The EITEP Euro Institute for Information and Technology Transfer in Environmental Protection believes that diversity and integration provide immense value to society. Especially in times of skilled labor shortages, it's essential to integrate every individual into our community. We have already demonstrated our commitment to this by signing the Diversity Charter (Charta der Vielfalt e.V.) some time ago. 10 December 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, gender, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
