Quick-build has many advantages to traditional design and build methods of permanent infrastructure. Quick build approaches depend on the goals of a place, corridor, or engagement strategy. I look forward to working closely with my Sam Schwartz colleagues to explore what's possible in ways that seem too daunting for a permanent installation. I know many planners, urban designers, and transportation professionals see real shortfalls in a standard roadway design. We need to allow for re-imagining our roadways, especially those that serve as a multi-purpose, multi-modal, multi-programmable spaces for people and all of our needs. People do a lot of things in public spaces like streets that contribute to a desirable place to exist. As Jeff Speck notes, people are the "indicator species" that demonstrate if a city has streets serving them: People sitting/walking/celebrating, people on bikes, people on scooters, people conducting business, people moving freight, people in cars respecting other people, people exchanging culture, and people behaving socially. We know our streets are platforms for these healthy behaviors and the design can hinder or support such behaviors. Quick-build strategies allow us to test what works to support and unlock our better behaviors. I hope more people take up the challenge. We have a team that brings a lot of lessons learned to apply strategies like a pro. We also can help you win funding to make it happen.

The 4th International Conference on Access Management will be held June 24-26, 2024 in Boston, MA.  The 2024 theme is Access Management: Safety and Design from the Curb to the Interchange for All Users. This event promotes idea sharing and showcases practitioner-ready techniques and academic work on the interaction between transportation and land use. The focus topic areas are: - Design - Improving Safety through Access Management - Land Use, Transportation Planning, and Legal Issues This event will bring together staff from transportation agencies from all levels of government, metropolitan and regional planning organizations, academia, the legal profession, as well as the commercial real estate owner and developer community. I had a great time engaging with transportation professionals and students at TransportationCampPHL 2024 last March 23, 2024, that was hosted at Drexel University's Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department and organized by passionate Philadelphians in coordination with the Philadelphia Chapter and Mid-Atlantic Region of Young Professionals in Transportation - YPT Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Chapter of WTS Philadelphia. This was my first “unconference” experience, and I really enjoyed it! Here are some takeaways from #TCPHL24: ·        #TCPHL24’s “unconference” format facilitates more participants to present what is most interesting and relevant to them, thereby allowing more engagement and thought-provoking conversations. ·        If you would like a session to be more policy focused or more technical, suggest your idea! Other attendees may be thinking the same thing, and you can help to focus the topic for all. ·        If a session needs some assistance, provide it yourself! You can always offer reminders about time or topic focus. ·        Informal and unscheduled conversations during lunch and between sessions are a great way to make introductions and continue the conversation. ·        I learned about Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) SCOPE Safety program. SEPTA’s coordinated response to safety and security, SCOPE, program won the American Public Transportation Association’s 2022 Innovation Award with regards to providing a safe and clean transit system for both riders and employees. SEPTA’s SCOPE program entails the following below: o   Safety: The placement of SEPTA police at known hotspots while utilizing the assistance of both public and private security to help offset the gaps in coverage. o   Cleaning: Increase and maintain schedules for cleaning through added resources to maintain a state of good repair as well as safety encompassing terminals, stations, and transit vehicles. o   Ownership: Through a coordinated approach of local community groups, community development corporations, county, government, and city stakeholders, these groups assisted SEPTA with barriers associated to addressing the vulnerable population seeking shelter of the SEPTA system. o   Partnership: Creating a network of partners within the SEPTA service area helps to offset barriers that can impede the vulnerable population from receiving needed assistance and services. o   Engagement: Utilize the resources listed above throughout the five-county service area to assist SEPTA in creating a safer and cleaner system. ·        I will be at the PHL Summer Gathering on August 3, 2024. Llwybr Newydd | The Wales Transport Strategy sets out an ambitious mode share target of 45% of journeys to be undertaken by walking, cycling and public transport by 2040, but what is the recipe to achieving these targets?   Clare Sheffield and I shared our thoughts earlier this week as part of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and CILT (UK) joint CPD series. We highlighted four key ingredients for success: Having a credible plan, establishing public consensus, securing funding/finance and improved data to inform decision making.   It was great to hear from fellow presenters Alison Thomas and Laura Norman who set out the context behind the targets and the significant changes to transport policy in Wales in response to the climate emergency. They provided insight on the recently updated WelTAG guidance – which further embeds the sustainable transport hierarchy, modal shift targets and new approach to road building within transport decision making, all underpinned by the Well-being of Future Generations Act.   Reflecting on the discussion, the transport dial has really shifted in recent years under the leadership of Lee Waters MS, and Wales is increasingly referenced as a leader globally on its policy response to the climate emergency. There is lots of work still to be done of course, but fundamental steps in terms of legislation and direction have been set and the challenge to the profession is clear – looking forward to continuing the conversation through the remainder of the webinar series. #WeAreArup #CIHTCymru #ModalShift #Transport #CPD
