Our Co-CEO, Claus Mathisen, recently joined FORESIGHT Climate & Energy podcast, "The Urban Report" for an intriguing discussion on the diverse approaches to decarbonizing the built environment in Europe and Japan. As we all know, reducing emissions is a global imperative. However, the methods employed to achieve this goal can vary significantly depending on the region. This podcast episode delves into the complexities of adapting climate mitigation measures to diverse contexts, where one-size-fits-all solutions simply won't cut it. Urban Partners has invested more than a decade in exploring and deeply understanding how to decarbonize the built environment. By piloting new solutions, implementing decarbonization incentives in every business case and building strong collaboration with various stakeholders, we invest in cities to tackle the climate crisis. Joining Claus on the podcast are esteemed built environment experts, including Signe Kongebro of Henning Larsen Architects, Jakob Norman-Hansen of BLOXHUB, and renowned Japanese architect Jun Mitsui. Together, they explore the cultural disparities in sustainability approaches between the Nordic countries and Japan. More importantly, they examine what it will take, individually and collectively, to meet our climate goals in the built environment. 🎧 Listen to the podcast: https://lnkd.in/dETVgBsV

Welcome back to Climate+! This is Episode 4, featuring Emmanuel Daniel at Alosanar. In this episode, we go deep into the built environment, looking at the ways that the Climate+ World is making the interaction of buildings, energy, water, artificial intelligence, and people quite different than it has ever been before. Emmanuel has been a leader in this field for many, many years and all around the world. Emmanuel is currently the CEO and Founder of Alosanar, a consultancy focused on building technology and human experience design through technology, sustainability, experiences, and people. Prior to Alosanar, Emmanuel was a leader at Microsoft for 12 years, shaping physical and digital environments from his native Singapore to nearly every continent on earth. Here's the challenge: We humans are creatures of our built environment – especially the home, office, commercial, and industrial buildings that keep us safe, comfortable, and productive. But most of that building stock was built before the phrases “climate change” or “hybrid work” entered the lexicon. Just in the US, something like 80% of homes are more than 20 years old and the average ages of both commercial buildings and school buildings is about 50 years. Those older buildings were designed around a set of assumptions that were reasonable for their time – pre-climate change ambient temperatures, humidity, and pre-wildfire air quality, for example. Little thought was given to energy efficiency or water efficiency, let alone greenhouse gases. (spoiler alert: buildings account for about 30% of operational GHG emissions in the US. And of course we were all in commute-to-office and work-from-office mode, not work-from-home or some hybrid. Finally, nobody foresaw our digital-everything world of computers, the Internet, server farms, electric vehicles, and now artificial intelligence. That's a big of a deal, and one where purpose and prosperity comes in many forms (and jobs!). How can we make this happen in the real world? Check it out -- and please like, comment, and share! Courage. The word came up rather a lot when I met Hannah Pathak, international managing director at Forum for the Future at the recent FM Conway Ltd Collaborative Sustainability event at which she was the keynote speaker. Hannah made a powerful impression on those in the room and underlined that when it comes to tackling climate change and achieving our net-zero emissions goals, the decisions we make in this decade will affect the trajectory of the next century. We are at a critical “choice point” for humanity facing decisions that are not easy – so, as she put it, we need the courage to transform; together, collaboratively. Hannah is my guest on The Infrastructure Podcast this week is and a long-standing champion for driving action across business to help accelerate the change needed to transform our approach to sustainable infrastructure. Have a listen at https://lnkd.in/eX54YufN - Hannah explains the challenges and opportunities so clearly. Certainly we need to apply our technical minds but, as Hannah pointed out at the FM Conway Ltd event, the Latin root of the word “courage” links it to the idea of “heart” and passion for a cause. True change, especially in the face of climate change, requires not only intellectual and technical understanding but also emotional investment. Ultimately it just makes good sense for investment in our infrastructure to generate more sustainable economic, social and environmental outcomes. And that usually means thinking harder rather than working harder. But is also means having the courage and passion to do thing differently. And that’s not easy. Enjoy the episode. Hannah is an inspiration for sure. #infrastructure #podcast #energy #design #decarbonisation #leadership #transformation #relationships #retrofit Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Andrew Hansen Joanne Conway Matt Tallon Rt Hon Sir Brandon Lewis CBE

Crushed limestone as a climate solution. I love the story this podcast tells, if for no other reason than its apparent simplicity. I came back from #ClimateWeek, a couple of weeks back, to learn that this project had been unfolding along a riverbank in #NovaScotia and, in a smaller way, in Fasken’s offices in Toronto and Vancouver. The podcast tells the story of the science. Kudos to Luke Connell and Shannon Sterling at CarbonRun for their ideas and execution. A collaboration of Fasken's Emerging Technology and Climate teams (Will Shaw, Kai Alderson, Alec McIlwraith-Black) helped support the most recent financing round that, we hope, can bring the project to more rivers, sequestering more carbon, and helping the health of the planet in an apolitical, slogan-free way. What a great way to deliver benefits across geographies, communities and political stripes. That’s a climate solution.
