During my career I’ve helped sell Australian mined uranium to nuclear power plants overseas and examined the viability of storing spent uranium in the Australian outback. Many years ago I attended an industry forum at which a Federal Minister said that nuclear was the best option for Australia but would politically never happen in our life time. The pursuit of decarbonisation, energy security and cost of supply means that things have changed and we must at least have the nuclear debate. Promising news for the nuclear sector in the UK. Earlier this week, EDF (UK) announced plans to extend the operations of its nuclear fleet, ensuring current output levels until 2026. Today, the UK Government recommitted to building a new fleet of nuclear reactors capable of producing 24GW of power by 2050, enough to meet a quarter of the UK's electricity demands. While this is not without its challenges, it's good to see positive steps being taken to reinforce the electricity system and boost the nation’s energy security. The message is clear: the EU recognizes that it needs nuclear power to achieve the objectives of the Green Deal. The Council of EU member states and the European Parliament agreed on Tuesday (6 February) to label nuclear power as a strategic technology for the EU’s decarbonization. After much back and forth, nuclear power was finally included in the single list of 17 technologies covered by the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), including all nuclear technologies: existing and future ones, fission, fusion as well as the fuel cycle. As expected, radical anti-nuclear groups are dissatisfied with the result, especially those in Germany who claim to be green but support replacing clean nuclear energy with coal or gas.

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) has made several recommendations to the government and Great British Nuclear (GBN) via its newly published report, Made In Britain: The Pathway to a Nuclear Renaissance. The report argues that the UK should seize the opportunity to start a negotiated process to determine which reactor technology is best placed to deliver a further large-scale project at Wylfa, whilst maximizing the British supply chain expertise. The APPG state that Wylfa is the best site in Europe for large-scale nuclear and is therefore ideal for realising the fleet of multi-unit replication. The report urges the government to choose a partner to deliver a major, multi-reactor, large-scale nuclear project at Wylfa before the end of this year’s Parliamentary term. The Government should start negotiating with KEPCO, EDF and Westinghouse as soon as possible. NWNA welcomes the report published by the APPG and agrees that the UK has an opportunity to revive the nuclear sector whilst maximising the socio-economic benefits across the region, but we must proceed with certainty and pace.
