Glioblastoma is the most lethal type of primary brain cancer due to its aggressive nature and its treatment-resistant characteristics. It is the most common form of primary brain cancer. Each year an estimated 14,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with the disease. A Mayo Clinic study shows an innovative treatment approach may offer improvement in overall survival in older patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma while maintaining quality of life. At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Sujay Vora, a radiation oncologist, spearheaded a research team delving into the efficacy of short-course hypo fractionated proton beam therapy with advanced imaging techniques for individuals over 65 grappling with newly diagnosed WHO grade 4 malignant glioblastoma. Glioblastoma, recognized as the most lethal primary brain cancer, presents a formidable obstacle due to its aggressive and resistant characteristics. Annually, around 14,500 new cases emerge in the U.S., underscoring its critical impact on healthcare providers and those affected. The recent Mayo Clinic study sheds light on a promising treatment avenue designed to potentially elevate survival rates for older patients confronting glioblastoma diagnoses. This innovative strategy not only strives to prolong life expectancy but also places a premium on enhancing the quality of life for these individuals. Cancer screening aims to detect cancer or pre-cancerous conditions early, before symptoms appear. By early detection, this increases the chances of successful treatment and can help prevent cancer from developing or progressing to advanced stages. Screening empowers patients, offering a proactive approach to health, significantly increasing survival chances, reducing treatment burdens, and enhancing overall well-being. It is a vital tool in reducing the global burden of cancer and fostering better health outcomes. #cancerscreening
🗓️ This is a good time of year to remind patients who are 45 years old, and older (or with a family history of colorectal cancer), to schedule that appointment for a colonoscopy. ⚕️Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. 🏥 Colonoscopies can detect cancer at an early stage, even before symptoms appear, making the disease much more treatable. 🩺 Regular screening can prevent colorectal cancer. Small pre-cancerous polyps can be identified, and in many cases removed, during the colonoscopy procedure. #cancerscreening #colonoscopy #colorectalcancer #capetownsurgery

On occasion of #glioblastoma awareness day: It was great to read from the announcement on CureVac' strategic restructuring, wherein the biotech will channel and align resources to strengthen focus on its high-value mRNA pipeline to novel opportunities of unmet need, that this will chiefly focus on cancer, including also #glioblastoma, a cancer with critical need to say the least. From the strategic announcement quoted below: "The company expects to report data from the Phase 1 study of its cancer vaccine candidate CVGBM in glioblastoma in the second half of 2024. By the end of 2025, CureVac expects to have two clinical candidates for shared-antigen cancer vaccines in solid tumor and hematological cancers, including one in collaboration with researchers at M.D. Anderson, with the plan to initiate two additional Phase 1 studies by the end of 2026." Great news to the future of translating mRNA technology further towards cancer therapy through personalised mRNA-based vaccination also in indications that will be beyond challenging to target through conventional therapeutic modalities. Keep it up, CureVac ! 🧬💊💪🍀 https://lnkd.in/dh7RSK49
Today is Glioblastoma Awareness Day, a crucial moment to spotlight one of the most aggressive and challenging forms of brain cancer. At CureVac, this cause is especially close to our hearts as we leverage our expertise in mRNA technology to explore innovative therapies for hard-to-treat cancers like glioblastoma. Breast cancer doesn’t only effect women, and male breast cancer needs better, more tolerable treatment options. In our next installment of Spotlight on Clinical Trials, we speak with medical oncologist and ETHAN clinical trial investigator Dr. Jose Pablo Leone about how he and his team are seeking to expand the option of endocrine (hormone) therapies for these patients beyond tamoxifen. “I'm optimistic that this will set the stage for future development of endocrine therapies for male breast cancer, where we will start with at least knowing what the most effective combinations are, and then go from there," said Dr. Leone.
