March 19, 1916 - First U.S. Air Combat Mission The First Aero Squadron made history by taking off in the first combat air mission in US history. The squadron of eight Curtiss "Jenny" planes was on a support mission for the 7,000 US troops who had invaded Mexico to capture revolutionary Pancho Villa. The mission came after Villa led a raid on Columbus, New Mexico, killing 17 Americans. Under orders from President Woodrow Wilson, the US Brigadier General John J. Pershing launched a punitive expedition into Mexico to capture Villa. Four days later, the First Aero Squadron was sent into Mexico to scout and relay messages for General Pershing. Despite numerous mechanical and navigational problems, the American fliers flew hundreds of missions for Pershing and gained important experience that would later be used by the pilots over the battlefields of Europe. However, during the 11-month mission, U.S. forces failed to capture the elusive revolutionary, and Mexican resentment over U.S. intrusion into their territory led to a diplomatic crisis. In late January 1917, with President Wilson under pressure from the Mexican government and more concerned with the war overseas than with bringing Villa to justice, the Americans were ordered home. This historic event paved the way for aerial combat in the US and provided invaluable experience for American pilots during World War I. #USHistory #AerialCombat #MilitaryHistory #aviationhistory

Royal Air Force (RAF) F-35B jets from 617 Squadron, Marham, United Kingdom, have deployed to Iceland to commence NATO's Air Policing mission. This is the first time British F-35s will have taken part in any NATO air policing mission. The F-35Bs will defend NATO airspace in the Arctic Region and provide Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to meet Iceland's Peacetime Preparedness Needs – or ASIC IPPN. The last deployment for British jets in Iceland was 2019, when four Typhoon jets flew 59 training sorties and more than 180 practice intercepts. The F-35 Lightning is held at high readiness to deploy in support of UK and NATO operations worldwide – from both land and sea. It is a multi-role combat aircraft equipped with advanced sensors, mission systems and low observable stealth technology. This means that enemy radar systems cannot easily detect the aircraft, giving those nations operating the F-35 a significant tactical advantage in many operational scenarios. Feb. 10 Summary of USCENTCOM Self-Defense Strikes in Yemen On Feb. 10, between 4 – 5 p.m., (Sanaa time), U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces successfully conducted self-defense strikes against two unmanned surface vessels (USV) and three mobile anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCM) north of Al Hudaydah, Yemen, that were prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea. CENTCOM identified these USVs and missiles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they presented an imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region. These actions will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels.

Canada to participate in NATO's largest exercise in decades: Steadfast Defender 2024 The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will participate in NATO's largest exercise in decades from the end of January to May 2024, deploying around 1,000 members to rehearse NATO’s Deterrence and Defence plans against Euro-Atlantic threats. This multi-month exercise simulates an Article 5 attack, divided into maritime defense of the North Atlantic and Arctic, and rapid deployment in Central and Eastern Europe. Assets include the HMCS Charlottetown with a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter, and a Canadian-led battle group in Latvia, featuring a Leopard 2 tank squadron. This operation marks a key step for the future Canadian-led Multinational Brigade in Latvia, enhancing CAF's integration within NATO's structure, reflecting Canada's commitment to NATO since Crimea's invasion in 2014. https://lnkd.in/gS_mfSru
