📣 Foresight Report: What will public health look like in 2035? 📣 In case you missed it, I'm proud to share EuroHealthNet's Foresight Report on Public Health in 2035, looking at the future of #PublicHealth in the EU. As the #EuropeanHealthUnion evolves, a stronger focus on prioritising prevention and health equity is key to building resilient and sustainable health systems. This is a very inspiring report, drafted with input from high-level public health experts from our partnership. It emphasises the necessity of robust #healthpromotion and #diseaseprevention strategies, while also warning against political polarisation and the spread of #misinformation as potential barriers to progress in public health. #HealthEquity #ForesightHealth #InvestInHealth

Tomorrow, EU leaders will have an opportunity to be bold. By expanding the European Health Union to focus on #HealthPromotion, they can pave the way for a healthier and more resilient Europe.  Leaders will convene for a #BE2024EU High-Level Conference where they'll discuss the future of the #EuropeanHealthUnion, as well as the strategic priorities for the next European Commission's health agenda. By rethinking the health union, we can address the most pressing public health challenges Europe faces. These challenges were identified in EuroHealthNet's Foresight exercise, which brought together 35 of the most prominent #PublicHealth experts in Europe. They encompassed persistent inequalities, rising levels of chronic diseases and #MentalHealth problems, as well as the digital transition and climate change. The common thread through it all? Our health systems need to keep people healthy as long as possible to #HealthEquity, and reduce the pressure on health systems. As we approach #WorldHealthDay this Sunday, April 7, it's essential to reflect on the universal right to health for every individual. Health isn't just a privilege; it's a fundamental human right enshrined in the World Health Organization Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and various international treaties. In my work across Africa, I've witnessed firsthand the importance of ensuring access to quality healthcare for all. Health disparities persist, but the recognition of health as a human right provides a framework for action and accountability. Countries have legal obligations to uphold this right, including guarantees of non-discrimination and equal treatment in health. The right to health encompasses more than just access to medical care; it includes the right to control one's health, informed consent, bodily integrity, and participation in health-related decision-making. The right to health is interconnected with other human rights, such as the rights to life, food, housing, education, and freedom from torture. It encompasses access to healthcare services regardless of the underlying determinants of health, emphasizing the importance of addressing social and economic factors that impact well-being. As we observe World Health Day and National #PublicHealthWeek (April 1-7), I hope you can recommit to advancing health equity and ensuring that everyone can access the care and support they need to lead healthy lives. https://lnkd.in/eEz3NA_5

In such a short while, I have expanded in knowledge and built more on my intellectual capacity on various subjects of public health importance. Of such is the insightful session I had with Dr. Mehad Nasreldin who spoke at The Academy of Public Health (The APH) ⚕️ lecture series about Health System Strengthening. One of the target of the SDG3 is achieving universal health coverage and I must say, this can be fulfilled a great deal if only the health system of a nation is strengthened . Dr. Mehad Nasreldin emphasized on the system building blocks of HSS among which were: leadership,finance, workforce, technologies,research,service delivery and most importantly community engagement. She also gave classical examples of nations who exemplified resilient health system in achieving universal health coverage. It is interesting to note that in the bid of identifying and implementing changes in policy and practice to improve a country’s health system, there are numerous interventions that can help strengthen it. They include and are not limited to the following: • Improving health service delivery in the following aspects; WASH, nutrition, maternal and child health, control of infectious diseases and NCD’s, mental health, emergency preparedness and response to health crises • Developing the health workforce • Strengthening the health information systems • Encouraging research, evidence based practice and innovations • Improving health financing • Health literacy • Policy coherence and community participation • Addressing climate change and gender disparities. All of these, will therefore aim to ensure that health services are available, accessible, affordable and of quality for all. In a conversation with IHME's Angela Apeagyei and Chris Murray, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) discusses the 15th year of IHME's Financing Global Health Report. This year's focus: the evolution of development assistance for health over time. Particularly highlighting the dramatic increase in development assistance for health as a result of the health-related response to the COVID pandemic, as well as the subsequent decline towards pre-pandemic levels in the levels of development assistance for health

The term 'Global Health' comes from an evolution of what was previously known as International Health. An area of work that often depicted unilateral global north to south medical aid work. The development of the new terminology was coined to recognise that the information, knowledge and flow of expertise was not in one direction. In fact, learnings could be take from multiple different directions and highlighted the need to treat health systems with equal respect. However, a recent article in The Lancet Global Health journal highlights the continuing challenges with colonialism and racism in global health. Despite the positive intentions of global health, decisions made from a central point, often one of greater power, finances and influence, are directly transposed to local situations. This presumes that all challenges can be addressed by the same solution and ignores global diversity. As with the United Nations approach to think global and act local - or Glocal approach - it is vital to understand local nuances and needs. In this, organisations need to devolve power, engage and work with local organisations, civil societies and communities to be impactful. This goes for governments, international organisations, humanitarian aid and benevolent funds, among many others. We are delighted to share that our research, “A scoping review of health systems resilience assessment frameworks” has been published in PLOS Global Public Health Journal, a journal dedicated to advancing global health equity by publishing open-access research that addresses critical issues such as health systems resilience, infectious diseases, and public health preparedness, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The study has been co-authored by ACCESS Health members Sushma Marita Dsouza Dr.Shrikant Kalaskar MEHNAZ KABEER Latika Rewaria Dr. N. Krishna Reddy Maulik Chokshi and former members Anuradha Katyal and Sreemeena Satyanarayana. The HSRA tool, developed by the GLC4HSR Secretariat - ACCESS Health International - is designed to provide a structured framework to assess health systems' resilience across different contexts and regions. It integrates key components like governance, financing, human resources, and service delivery, aiming to help policymakers and healthcare providers identify gaps and optimize responses during crises.
