Europeans want the European Union to address looming crises, including growing inequalities, increases in non-communicable diseases and mental health problems, and climate change. Will the new College of European Commissioners meet their expectations? Yesterday, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the new European Commissioners and their portfolios. While the College will focus strongly on boosting competitiveness, we worry it might have lost sight of one lesson learned during COVID-19: without good health, a society cannot thrive. In a news release, published today, EuroHealthNet expresses concerns about the lack of visibility of policies that improve health and address inequalities in the new Commissioners' portfolios. These should go hand in hand with the current EU narrative on boosting competitiveness. Have a look at the news release ➡ https://lnkd.in/dqnKET4T Read more about our priorities for the 2024-2029 landscape ➡https://lnkd.in/exgKgtiB European Commission #PublicHealth #HealthPromoting #HealthInequalities.

In her Mission Letters to the candidates for EU Commissioner, Ursula von der Leyen has been clear. The #EU is entering a new era of participative democracy, where #CitizenParticipation and dialogue are central to policymaking. Today, EuroHealthNet joins Von der Leyen's call for citizen participation by launching its latest #PolicyPrécis, which helps decision-makers and public health authorities create space for dialogue in their own work. Involving citizens in the development of policies and practices helps ensure that they reflect community needs, enjoy support, and are sustainable. It's especially powerful in public health, as dialogue can help decrease health inequalities and provide transparency about how decisions are made. As we approach the next two weeks of confirmation hearings of the EU Commissioners-designate, we anticipate discussions on how new leadership will promote participatory policymaking. We especially look forward to hearing from Glenn Micallef, proposed Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport. If confirmed, he will be tasked with organising a youth policy dialogue and creating a youth advisory board to engage directly with the European Commission President. Excellent key note speech by Dr Hans Kluge, Regional Director WHO Regional Office for Europe, as ever, this morning. He presented four key areas for innovation: ✔️ 1 -work on guaranteeing national health security, in the context of war, pandemics, AMR and he was stressing the One Health approach ✔️ 2 -unfinished work regarding the burden of NCDs and mental health, accelerate action on the NCD targets through the ''best buys'' and action on the commercial determinants ✔️ 3 -work on the climate crisis which is also a health crisis, announcing the launch of a new pan-European Commission on Climate and Health in Reykjavik next year. ✔️4 -lead an Action Framework on ageing well in society, starting with a young peoples health strategy and integrating health & social services for ageing well in dignity, reflecting an Economy of Wellbeing. Hans Kluge also made an important call to better protect woman and children against any form of violence and harassment. Finally, he made a strong commitment to equity at the heart of all health policies taken forward! EuroHealthNet will welcome Dr Kluge’s re-election tomorrow and we look forward to continue our collaboration in line with the NSA engagement plan. The launch of which I was pleased to support yesterday! #RC74CPH #RC74 Natasha Azzopardi Muscat

Last week, our colleagues Samuele Tonello and Sofia Romagosa took part in the FEAST General Assembly in Portugal, where they explored innovative local initiatives aimed at transforming the region's food system. So, what were our team's key takeaways from the week? 🌱 Field visits made it clear that local farmers, fishermen, and producers cannot be left to navigate an unequal system alone. They need stronger support to thrive. 🤝 That's why it's crucial to continue advocating for EU-level food policies that enable local, sustainable alternatives to flourish, helping to build healthier, more equitable, and sustainable food systems across Europe. Want to learn more about the FEAST initiative? FEAST Impressions from Portugal! Our FEAST General Assembly concluded on a high note, with insightful discussions and smiles all around! 😊 The event kicked-off with an inspiring day trip to the Lima Valley and Minho Valley sub-regions, where we all got a chance to look closely at innovative projects and community initiatives that are transforming the region's food system. This was followed by productive discussions on day-two where we discussed takeaways from the site visits and new possibilities, innovative solutions, possible collaborations, strategies, and much more. We extend our special thanks to Paulo Barreiro de Sousa, the Vice-president of Ponte de Lima Municipality, Ana Paula Vale, Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo, José Paulo Queiroz, Executive Secretary of Comunidade Intermunicipal do Alto Minho (CIM Alto Minho), and luís nobre, Presidente of Câmara Municipal de Viana do Castelo for taking their time out for supporting FEAST’s vision and highlighting the importance of sustainable food systems, with a focus on promoting healthy eating, supporting local production, reducing food waste, and enhancing food education through collaboration between local farmers, schools, municipalities, and stakeholders. Please find detailed information about the entire event on our FEAST Press Corner: https://lnkd.in/e8KBGw_R We look forward to meeting again with more transformative ideas on the European Food System! #feast2030 #transformation #sustainability #foodsystem

On this #WorldMentalHealthDay, we highlight the inspiring work of mental health advocate Mateusz Biernat, co-founder of the Human Foundation in Poland. Mateusz champions the vital need for self-determination and dignity for those people living with mental health problems. Fighting stigma plays a crucial role in building inclusive communities that recognise and nurture everyone’s potential. To effectively address mental health problems we must collaborate as a community to provide comprehensive support for those in need. We call for policies that prioritise mental health, and increased funding so that we can live in a Europe, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
