Listening to the Voices of Small Farmers: Insights from Fieldwork in Mysore Farmers in the semi-arid landscapes of Mysore, India, say that water scarcity is a problem. In the drylands, shifting rainfall patterns and prolonged dry spells cause crop failures, dwindling yields, and the disappearance of traditional crops like pigeon pea. In the irrigated wetlands, on the other hand, the pursuit of water-intensive cash crops like ginger and sugarcane has led to rampant groundwater overexploitation, soil degradation, and water pollution from excessive agrochemical use. As part of her PhD research on understanding future climate risks to smallholder agriculture systems in the global south, Manasa S. has spent six weeks exploring farmers’ experiences with climate change, their adaptation strategies, and the policy gaps that hinder their resilience. Climate change not only threatens small and marginal farmers’ livelihoods in India, but also carries far-reaching implications for regional food security and ecosystem health. Manasa’s research points to the pressing need for inclusive and sustainable adaptation strategies that involve: 1. Agricultural extension services and knowledge dissemination 2. Promoting climate-smart agriculture practices 3. Access to drought-tolerant crop varieties, crop insurance schemes, and innovative financing 4. Robust environmental regulations on water and agrochemical use 5. Fostering diversified and resilient food systems Farmer insights also play a key role in developing adaptation policies that are tailored to local contexts, socially inclusive, and environmentally sound. Such approaches can help India to meet its commitments to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement on climate change and ensure food security for its population. 🌾 India: The Agricultural Heartbeat of the World 🌾 India stands proudly as a global leader in agricultural exports, feeding millions beyond our borders. As a "Kheti Pradhan Desh," our farmers are the backbone of this achievement, tirelessly working the land, nurturing crops, and sustaining life. Yet, a poignant reality looms: this could be the last generation deeply rooted in farming as rapid technological advancements draw young people to urban areas and tech careers, reducing the number of hands available to tend our fields! 👨🌾 Why Farmers and Farming Matter? -Food Security: Ensuring a stable food supply for our nation and the world. -Economic Backbone: Providing jobs and sustaining rural communities. -Cultural Heritage: Reflecting centuries of wisdom and resilience. -Environmental Stewardship: Vital for preserving our planet. Let’s make a difference together by enabling farmers to thrive through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and modern farming methods Let’s.. 🌱 Advocate for Fair Policies: Ensure fair prices and resources for farmers. 🌱 Promote Sustainable Practices: Encourage eco-friendly farming methods. 🌱 Facilitate Technological Adoption: Provide access to the latest technologies and training. 🌱 Celebrate Agricultural Heritage: Highlight the cultural significance of farming. 🌱 Inspire the Next Generation: Motivate youth to view farming as a viable, innovative, and honorable profession. India is standing at a critical juncture, where the need for a new Green Revolution has never been more urgent. As APJ Abdul Kalam wisely said, "Bharat desh tab tak tarakki nahi karega jab tak yuva murke gaon ke taraf nahi jayega." His words remind us that true progress will only be achieved when the youth return to their roots and contribute to the growth of our rural communities. Today, many farmers' children are moving away from agriculture, and in just one generation, crucial farming knowledge is being lost. To secure the future of Indian agriculture, we need to modernize our approach. Embracing innovation, upgrading machinery, and introducing sustainable practices will make farming a prosperous career choice for the next generation. The future of India lies in empowering our farmers and villages through technology and modernization. Let's bring innovation to the fields and create a bright, sustainable future for Indian agriculture. #APJAbdulKalam #GreenRevolution #AgricultureInnovation #YouthEmpowerment #FarmersFirst #India

The journey of marginal farmers in India is fraught with challenges that have historically kept them on the peripheries of economic progress and environmental sustainability. These farmers, who tirelessly till small patches of land, often find themselves ensnared in a cycle of low productivity and limited access to markets. The absence of a formal platform to recognize and reward their contributions to agroforestry and sustainable farming practices further exacerbates their plight. They remain largely invisible to the global carbon credits markets, a sector burgeoning with potential for income enhancement and environmental impact. This disconnect not only stifles their economic growth but also sidelines their significant role in combating climate change through traditional and eco-friendly farming techniques. As a beacon of progress, 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐌𝐀 stands poised to bridge the gap between marginal farmers and the lucrative carbon credits markets. This platform is not just a Program; it's a gateway to empowerment, sustainability, and increased income potential for those who form the heart of India's agrarian community. By bringing the marginal farmers into the mainstream, 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐌𝐀 aims to weave the rich tapestry of Indian agriculture into the global narrative of environmental stewardship and economic resilience. Let’s cultivate change, one farmer at a time. #TREEMA #AgricultureInnovation #SustainableFarming #CarbonCredits #Empowerment

🌍 Nurturing the Future: Climate-Smart Agriculture in India 🌱 In 2010, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) introduced a groundbreaking concept to the world - climate-smart agriculture (CSA). This innovative approach aims not just at ensuring food security but also at achieving developmental goals amidst our changing climate. For a country like India, where agriculture is both a livelihood and cultural heritage for millions, adopting CSA practices could redefine its agricultural landscape. By integrating modern technologies and sustainable farming practices, CSA emphasizes efficiency and resilience. It's about more than just survival; it’s about thriving in an era of unpredictable weather patterns and environmental challenges. As we stand on the brink of potential agricultural revolution, one must wonder: How will India harness this opportunity to not only feed its population but also lead by example in sustainability? Are we ready to embrace change for a greener tomorrow? Let's explore deeper into what climate-smart agriculture means for India: https://lnkd.in/eP3K8KAP #ClimateSmartAgriculture #Sustainability #Innovation #IndiaFarming 🚜💧🌾
