🔙 Throwback to a Structural Survey 🏗️ We conducted a structural survey of a pre-WW2 MOD Barracks Hangar to assess the capacity of its existing doors for lifting, refurbishment, and reinstallation. Due to the presence of asbestos on-site, full protective equipment, including suits and respirators was required for safety. "Building Dry in the Wet: The Magic of Cofferdams" Cofferdams are temporary watertight enclosures constructed to create a dry work environment for building structures in or near water. They allow construction activities like bridge piers, docks, and dams to proceed without water interference. The working principle involves driving sheet piles or walls into the riverbed or seabed to form a barrier. The enclosed area is then dewatered using pumps to remove water. This creates a dry and stable work area. Once construction is complete, the cofferdam is removed. The design and materials of cofferdams depend on the site's conditions, including water depth, flow, and soil type. video rights : respective owners DM for removal/credits #cofferdams #UnderwaterConstruction #bridge #engineering #technology #civilconstruction #construction #civilengineering #engenharia #engenhariacivil

"Mastering the Elements: Cofferdams Turn Waterlogged Sites into Dry Construction Zones." Cofferdams are temporary watertight structures used in construction to create a dry work area in waterlogged or submerged environments. They are typically made from sheet piles driven into the ground, forming an enclosure that is then dewatered. This allows construction activities, such as bridge piers or foundation work, to proceed in a dry, controlled space. Cofferdams are essential in projects where water poses a significant challenge, providing a safe and efficient method to manage water intrusion. Once the construction is complete, the cofferdam is removed, and the area is restored to its original state. video rights : Respective owners DM for credits/removal #cofferdam #bridge #engineering #technology #engenharia #construction #civilconstruction #civilengineering #engenhariacivil

HOP have been providing fast track structural engineering support and design services to make safe Worthing Pier following storm damage and loss or damage to several of its legs. The situation needed temporarily closure of the pier in October, to keep people safe and enable stabilisation works. A multidisciplinary team from Worthing Borough Council, Mackley, HOP Engineers and others have carefully managed the situation. The pier is exposed to complex tide and wave action from the sea. It also has a rich history of intervention including having been ‘severed’ during WWII to prevent it being used as a landing stage during invasion. Understanding and predicting how such a structure might react and balancing conservation and safety, yet minimising disruption is highly challenging. HOP fast tracked an inspection, advised and assisted development of a plan to tackle the challenges, recommending and designing a new steel support structure such that the deck could be secured in the area. HOP Directors Tristan Banks and Nigel Hosker said “It is testament to a great team and supply chain, that works of this nature can be successfully delivered in as little as 5 weeks. It has very much been the Teams focus to get the pier open again as soon as possible, so the public can enjoy promenading, soaking up its heritage and its offerings”.. Did you know? Temporary structures like shoring, cofferdams, falsework, and formwork play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and stability of construction sites on heavy civil infrastructure projects. These structures support the weight of earth, concrete, and other materials. Without these temporary solutions, many of the roads, bridges, and other structures we rely on every day wouldn’t be possible. Understanding the engineering behind these systems is vital for anyone in the construction industry. #CivilEngineering #TemporaryStructures #SafetyFirst #ConstructionInnovation #EngineeringExcellence #ASCE

Serious rusting observed on a steel wide flange column supporting a 3-story building raises critical concerns. Is this the result of improper building envelope maintenance, faulty construction practices, or insufficient documentation in the original design? Proper maintenance and detailed as-built drawings are essential to ensure structural longevity and safety. Addressing issues like this is a reminder of the importance of proactive inspections and robust design practices in protecting the integrity of South Padre Island environment.

It's my Birthday 12/11/24 - however it is also the DOB effective date for the "New Definition of a Major Building" per Local Law 147/2021 to 7 or more Stories or 75' in height. https://lnkd.in/e74ujMtA Per the Service Notice, the new definition does not impact facade work. Accordingly, Site Safety will continue to apply only to buildings more than 14 stories or 200' in height. It does however impact Site Safety requirements for General Construction, Structural, Foundation, Support of Excavation and Earthwork.

Did you know that Prestressed Double T's can span over 100 feet? That's right, a FIMA rated Double T can span up to 104 feet! If you're working on a project that requires large spans, such as storm shelters, prestressed double T's might be the best option. Consider using them to ensure your project is structurally sound and meets all safety requirements. #construction #engineering #prestressed #DoubleT Prestressed Concrete Construction
