NEW BLOG: https://lnkd.in/eNQgAe9z Half time... I am now a little over half way through my Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust journey studying black soldier fly production systems around the world. I have now been to #SouthAmerica, #NorthAmerica and a little bit of #Europe. Having been in the #BlackSoldierFly industry for just 2 years, my world education has been truly eye opening. I have visited and spoken to leaders of the industry, be it fly breeders, larvae growers, technology engineers, politicians, scientists, your humble farmer and many more. They all have given me the insights and know-how needed to take this industry forward. Here's a few of my key takeaways. 💡 From the first innovators in 2012, the industry has come a long way and is at the foot of the growth curve. 💡 Commercial acumen of the industry needs to improve - I haven't yet met a profitable insect business. 💡 The road map to commercialisation requires supply chain segmentation, tighter cost management, creative value-added products and collaboration. 💡 A combination of domestic / continental agri-food systems and regulation gives each black soldier fly operation its focus. 💡 The industry has huge market projections and has attracted plenty of bright sparks, but the practical mind is lacking. For the 2nd half, what questions do you want me to find out for you? ❓ I've written this up in more detail in a blog post, which you can find here >>>> https://lnkd.in/eNQgAe9z Like and follow for more content.

I was honored to visit Derek Bowen and his impressive teammates at Gilmer County High School. This team is doing incredible work to serve and inspire students through game changing experiences in agriculture. Our partnership is critical to the future of the north Georgia region. The University of North Georgia is focused on impact through accountability. We have made a strategic big bet to supercharge the workforce - agriculture is a key focus. Come see our work as we move Bold Forward!

⚽ 🌿 Weeds on sports fields pose a continuous challenge, requiring effective management to address impacts on aesthetics, playability, performance, and safety. Weed control involves various approaches, including herbicide application. However, concerns about human and environmental health have led to increased regulation. Unlike prior research on herbicide perceptions in home lawns and parks, a recent study in Crop, Forage & Turfgrass Management focuses on sports fields. The study found that participants preferred weed-free fields and more effective control methods, despite acknowledging potential harms. The findings highlight the importance of aligning maintenance practices with user preferences for weed-free surfaces and effective control methods in managing turfgrass sports fields. https://lnkd.in/d6dsRvfY @Michael B. Why would I follow this network group? Well, a collective of some duckweed researchers noticed that interaction between research groups and industries is only moderate, even though everyone knows collaboration is key in progress. 🎯 The first ambition of the European Duckweed Network is matchmaking. By following this platform, you can make yourself known as a duckweed enthusiasts. You can also use this platform to start discussions, ask questions, or highlight a network event you are organizing. 🎯 The second ambition of the network is capacity building. Therefore, we are planning to update the charms of duckweed website. 🎯 And finally, we like to bring people together in Europe. Two tours around our duckweed facilities are planned. We hope to see you in 2025 in Wales and in 2027 in Belgium. 🙏 This European Duckweed Network was made possible by the support of Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) & Universities Wales and is a collaboration between Marcel Jansen, Quinten Bafort, Reindert Devlamynck, Dylan Gwynn-Jones Ph.D., Nele Horemans, Els Prinsen, Yves Van de Peer, Erik Meers, Ann JF Cuypers, Nathalie Vanhoudt, Michiel Huybrechts, Marcella Souza

Vice President, Sustainability | Net Zero | Climate-Smart Agriculture | Biodiversity | Livestock Grazing | Supply Chain Transparency
At AgriWebb, we believe that farmers' perspectives should inform the design of any new program or tool. For that reason, we annually survey almost a thousand grazing operations around the world to hear producers' thoughts. We are excited to share that our 2024 survey has just gone out! I'm especially intrigued to see the answers to these sustainability questions: - What types of biodiversity related practices do you employ or plan to employ? - What climate-related practices do you employ or plan to employ?( Eg, animal lifecycle management, improved grazing, feed composition, genetics, reduced fertilizer use, etc.) - Are you currently participating in any carbon or sustainability programs? - What features would you most like to see AgriWebb make available to you? (e.g., virtual fencing & GPS ear tags, soil sample documentation, remote sensing of forage, etc.) Our team will share the results with everyone as soon as they are in. If you would like to receive our newsletter with a link once the report is available, please email sustainability@agriwebb.com. I'd also be grateful for anyone willing to share this survey link with grazers you know who might be willing to share their thoughts. We want to hear from them! https://lnkd.in/gnRWyCzi #climate #biodiversity #grazing William Burnidge Sam Wildman Nancy Labbe Western Landowners Alliance Point Blue Conservation Science Wendy Millet Samantha Werth, PhD Katie Ambrose CJ Blew Brett Spader Mike Williams Katie Jeanne Roberti Chad Ellis Garth Boyd, Ph.D. Michael Delbar Erik Glenn Rich Bradbury James Clement Andrew Ward (Wardy) Sarah C. This is another take on the old saw that "All roads lead to Rome"... there are many paths to move agriculture forward, and we applaud everyone on the research journey! How is this different from prairie strips? Prairie strips are narrow vegetative filter strips placed down slope from a drainage area. They intercept and slow surface flow causing soil sediment to be deposited within the strip. They are remarkably effective in reducing sediment delivery to streams, and they are a reminder of the disproportionate benefits that can occur with some conservation practices. However, outside the strip itself, prairie strips do not reduce soil displacement or infield soil erosion. Perennial groundcover coupled with zone tillage on the contour significantly reduces both and may interfere less with field operations than prairie strips. 🚨 CALLING ALL LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS...It's your last chance to participate in our 2024 State of the Farmer survey, so don't miss out! This survey directly informs our annual State of the Farmer report which will be released next quarter, and will include unique insights straight from the POV of producers who power our industry. Your input will help us shed light on the following questions: - What are livestock producers prioritizing and preparing for in the coming year? - How is tech adoption continuing to evolve in the livestock industry? - How are livestock producers informing the conversation around land stewardship, sustainability, and corporate climate goals in 2024? Not a farmer or rancher, but know one? Make sure to share this survey link; the more voices we can reflect, the better! #aginnovation #ranching #livestockfarming
