China remains the largest worldwide market for beauty products, on par if not bigger than the US if you account for all the channels that serve Chinese consumers (local stores, cross-border both official and daigous, travel retail both local and international). However, since 2022, Chinese consumers are much more responsible in their spending and keep arbitrating between local, large international brands, and indie specialized brands. Growth has been sluggish and depending on deeper promotions. So, how can one succeed in such a market? The Business of Fashion has some interesting insights from local experts, including Gregoire Grandchamp Grampchamp from Next Beauty. [2024 Korea Expos Schedule] As 2024 begins, companies wishing to participate in the expo will get busy. WITH.C has not yet officially participated in an expo, but we regularly go to expos to look at trends and talk with people in the industry. In particular, the product direction that Korean consumers want and the direction that overseas buyers want are different, and the expo is a good place to study the differences. Today, April 26th, I participated in the International Cosmetic Raw Materials and Technology Exhibition held in Llsan-si, Korea and gained a lot of information. It's important to understand the context behind the China profitability flags raised by several global beauty brands in recent weeks. As widely reported, many renowned global beauty brands had sales & profitability challenges with China in 2023. However, there were a few bright sparks such as L’OCCITANE Group, SkinCeuticals. and Helena Rubinstein. It seems these brands sustained efforts and invested significantly in messaging focussed on product solutions to specific problems and efficacy. Our own research tells us that these are the key considerations for premium to luxury Chinese skincare consumers. Perhaps some of the bigger and more established players got complacent? Or perhaps they got caught off guard by a shift in channel preferences? Were they expecting offline to recover quicker from the pandemic? Were they subsequently over-reliant on Tmall for sales growth? Tmall has been the prominent e-commerce platform for beauty in China for several years but last year looks to have been a watershed moment. Did the overall double digit decline in skincare sales on Tmall itself coupled with even higher double digit growth on 抖音 tik tok take brands by surprise? Douyin is now set to surpass Tmall as the number 1 platform for skincare sales in 2024. Indeed, in January we saw that Douyin skincare sales were almost double that of Tmall. It's a platform and dynamic shift brands cannot ignore. Surely, the giants within beauty will not be caught on their heels this year - we expect them to stabilise on Tmall and likely manage Douyin growth better i.e. avoid costly and excessive livestream discounting. In fact, looking specifically at L'Oréal in January 2024 - the activity and performance suggests just that. As always, the headlines are important but with China it's always vital to understand the context and of course the numbers.
