A few months ago, I posed a question to the MalaysianPAYGAP community about their dislikes concerning career fairs and career-related events. Their responses: ❌ Speakers who have products to sell afterwards ❌ Poor ventilation at the venues ❌ Low-quality food offerings ❌ Career fairs resembling 'slave markets' ❌ Companies instructing them to apply online What they are expressing is essentially a distaste for inauthenticity, coupled with a longing for genuine, soulful human interactions. This mini survey made me realize that while there are many career fairs out there, and conferences for bosses, but there isn't one that truly celebrates us, the working people. This realization has inspired the vision to curate a summit tailored exclusively for us! The entire event planning is rooted in the core principles of MPG: peer-to-peer support, a growth mindset, and transparency. It has been a challenging few months of planning, seeking trust and support from companies. Countless of rejections later bounced back into Eunice Yin Ern and my mailbox; this summit MUST still proceed, with or without sponsorship. After all, the primary goal is not to secure sponsors but to OCCUPY a space where the voices of working individuals are valued and exchanged. Also how many times can an online community like MPG experiment and play with a vision? Probably only few or once in a lifetime! If not now, when? If not us, who? Our February job shadow was another excellent event. We were happy to host a teacher with a few of her students, several returning visitors, and many new faces who were eager to learn. Our returning visitors displayed noteworthy progress and our team was able to provide tons of one on one support throughout the day to help them grow. Providing these events has been a rewarding experience for my team and I to work on together. We see immediate impact and tangible value for these students who are curious and eager to learn. We're getting tons of positive feedback from the students who attend. Knowing they are getting value is a huge motivator to continue our work. We want to encourage (or even pressure) other businesses to launch free training programs like this with their teams. We have seen tremendous cultural benefit, strong community support, and excellent opportunities for hiring. This is completely possible for businesses of all sizes, in all lines of work. It's time we stop complaining about how hard it is to find people in our organizations. It's time to stop saying that kids don't want to work these days. It's time we stop griping about how students who enter in after a degree or a vocational program still need to be trained. Family Connections allows me to help people who are in need. I love how Family Connections is family-oriented and the environment here is warming. I also appreciate belonging to a company that holds diversity and inclusion as a part of the work culture. ➡️How long have you worked here❓️ RH: I have worked at Family Connections for 1 year. ➡️What has been the greatest moment in your career at FC❓️ RH: The greatest moment I’ve had so far in my career at Family Connections is housing my very first client in their own apartment. It was a very humbling and exciting experience. Seeing the client being able to flourish and become independent was rewarding.　 ➡️What do you enjoy most about working here❓️ RH: What I enjoy most about working here is being able to collaborate and work with such amazing staff. Community Connections and Youth Supportive Housing staff are amazing, and I know I can always lean on them to learn more and for help.　 ➡️What are your hopes for the future of Family Connections❓️ RH: My hope here at Family Connections is that I will be able to complete my internship and advance into a different career path once I obtain my master’s in social work. I have three amazing daughters and I love having new experiences with them. I used to feel uncomfortable telling people I was joining the family business. 🤯 Crazy, I know. I was 22, I just finished my Masters. “What are you doing next?” “What graduate schemes have you applied for?” Just some of the typical post-grad questions I was asked about my future plans👩🏽🎓 I replied with “joining the family business” - People thought it was a cop out, that I had been handed the opportunity and raised eyebrows at the fact that I was not chasing the established grad schemes. They were wrong. I was lucky enough to watch my mum work from her home office, whilst I would study. 🌍 Drawn into the world of 360 Recruitment and its dynamic nature, I was able to witness the rollercoaster of highs/lows that come with the everyday running of a Recruitment agency. So I chose to follow in her footsteps… 👣 I have always been driven by a passion for helping people. The idea of assisting people in finding their next role that resonates with their skills, values and passion… instantly intrigued me. It was something that I knew I could do well and also love. The values my mum upholds are mirrored in the family business she built. She prioritises transparency, trust, and authenticity in every interaction, ensuring open communication regardless of the news—be it positive or negative. 🤝🏽 And for this reason, I knew I wanted to be apart of it. So I did it… I joined my mums agency as a Resourcer. I put the graft in, threw myself in the deep end, put in the extra hours, learned from my mistakes and celebrated the highs! I hardly switched off, if anything I had more pressure applied on me because I was the bosses daughter. ⏩ Fast forward to now, NISHA PUREWAL and I have combined our skills, knowledge and passion for helping people with the recent launch of INishative & Co (Recruitment Consultancy). It’s almost holiday season! 🏝️ But what does that mean for those of us looking for jobs during this time? 👉 Slower response times: it’s hard to wait for a reply from a company, but we have to be patient, and maybe be proactive in following up. Team members on vacation means more delays in hiring processes. 👉 Fewer job posts: most companies will not post new roles during the summer So what now, if you can’t hurry up the process and don’t have new opportunities? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! This is a perfect time to: 🌳 Relax and unwind: job searching is hard, and you might be feeling burned out and overwhelmed. Take a break, go for walks, hikes, read your favourite book by the canal and enjoy the summer. It’s important to recharge 🧠 Reflect on your career journey: are you going in the right direction? Are you happy with your path and do you have a plan for the future? Where do you want to be in 5 years? 💪 Improve on your cv/portfolio: Have you learned any useful tips that you haven’t had the time to incorporate into your CV yet? Or maybe you just want to fine tune some portfolio details. One of my favourite parts of a career exploration conversation with a client, is when they might mention something off-handed that actually can hold a lot of importance for them. The first C-Suite individual I worked with was during my master’s training, where we would provide one to ones whilst being filmed for assessment (yes, terrifying). I remember that she had completed everything she felt that she needed to in her career. She had all the money she needed, but she didn’t know what her next step would be. She happened to mention a volunteer role that she had been doing, and it was clear from how passionately she talked about it, that it meant a lot to her. However, she had put a barrier up to this, saying it wouldn’t be an option. But me being me, dug a little deeper! It turned out, there was an answer to finding fulfilment for her, utilising that organisation she volunteered for…but in a paid role! This meant the bureaucratic barriers and office politics of ‘only being a volunteer’ would be resolved. So, I was reminded of that interaction today, when I spoke to a new client who is qualified to PhD level, explained to me that their part-time job in a bookstore was the job they had enjoyed in the past. Instead of glossing over this, we dug a little deeper into why, and it revealed many helpful details that we used to ‘paint a picture’ of what qualities a job would need to have to be fulfilling for her.
