🚀 Kudura Power East Africa Ltd (KPEA) aims to grow from 35 to 150 employees, focusing on increasing women’s representation in field and technical roles. To do this, KPEA needed to tackle biases head-on. Opportunities for Gender-Sensitive Mechanization To fully harness the benefits of agrimachinery for women in Africa, it’s crucial to design interventions that: Increase women’s access to affordable and appropriate machinery (e.g., smaller machines tailored to women’s needs). Provide gender-sensitive training and capacity-building programs for women farmers. Improve women’s access to financial services, such as loans and subsidies, to acquire machinery. Create policies that address land rights and other structural inequalities affecting women’s ability to invest in machinery. Programs and initiatives that incorporate these strategies can ensure that agricultural mechanization contributes to the empowerment and economic inclusion of women in Africa. https://lnkd.in/d4NtAnK8

One of our key initiatives is enhancing the sheanuts value chain, which not only creates value for our business but also generates significant job opportunities, particularly for women. The sheanuts value chain involves multiple stages, including harvesting, pre-processing, handling, and marketing. Women play a critical role in this process, from collecting sheanuts in rural areas to engaging in pre-processing activities such as drying, shelling, and sorting. By focusing on this value chain, Noba Africa leverages the labor and skills of women, ensuring they are integral to our operations and benefit from the economic opportunities created. Our approach involves providing women with training and resources to improve their efficiency and productivity in sheanut pre-processing. We conduct workshops and on-field demonstrations to teach best practices in handling and processing sheanuts, ensuring that the nuts meet high-quality standards required for international markets. This training not only enhances the quality of the product but also increases the income of women by enabling them to process more sheanuts within a shorter time frame. Additionally, Noba Africa invests in the necessary infrastructure, such as drying facilities and storage units, to support women in their pre-processing activities. By improving access to these facilities, we reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the overall value of the sheanuts. Through our initiatives, we have seen a significant increase in women's participation in the sheanuts value chain. This involvement not only provides them with a steady source of income but also boosts their economic independence and status within their communities. Furthermore, by creating jobs and empowering women, we contribute to the broader goal of gender equality and inclusive growth. Intellecap in Africa helped #climatesmart enterprises scale and simultaneously mainstream gender across their value chain. #Agriculture remains one of the important sectors for the economic development of East Africa, contributing to >30% of GDP and providing livelihood opportunities to ~80% of the region’s rural population. However, climate change has a huge impact on low-income populations that rely on agriculture for their livelihoods – especially women, who comprise > 50% of the agri workforce in East Africa. Supported by International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Intellecap launched an accelerator to support climate-smart agriculture enterprises to scale and simultaneously mainstream gender across their value chain. Through the program, Intellecap is offering bespoke gender-transformative technical assistance & business support to generate evidence for the larger sector on the role of gender mainstreaming to advance low carbon development.
