Gozo (Malta) is one of the island of the Mediterranean committed to be a global front-runner for sustainability. With a score of 2.7 drops on a maximum of 5, the island is above the average among the Mediterranean islands on sustainability (as a result of the assessment on energy, water, mobility, waste and environment). This is the conclusion of the Greening the Islands Foundation Observatory Global Index report that I had the pleasure to present today at the Islands Commission session of Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) General Assembly in Gozo. Among the main recommendations to be addressed in the coming years: ✅ increase the penetration of renewables through appropriate policies that maximize self-consumption, more investments in storage and modernization of the grid, ✅ development of a strategy for a bike mobility and invest more in electromobility infrastructures, change the existing ferries with electric ones for the short connections with Malta, ✅ more water reuse practices especially for agriculture, ✅ implemention of composting facilities to reduce the waste that goes to Malta. The first step to achieve a goal is always to be aware about the situation and monitoring the progress towards it. The GTIO Index is the pioneering sustainability indicator for islands, which aims also to group islands with similar needs to attract investments. Among the next islands where the index will be applied is Curacao that next week will host the 2nd GTI Observatory Summit. Valencia, home to PowerCo’s second site, is the European Green Capital 2024. This honor is significant for us due to our strong ties with this inspiring city. Valencia’s achievements in sustainable tourism, climate neutrality and green transition are celebrated during “Valencia Cities Climate Week”. 🌳 97 % of Valencia’s residents live within 300 meters of green areas, showing the city’s dedication to air quality and ecosystem restoration. The “Neighbourhood and Food Programme” promotes sustainable and inclusive food production. 🚗🔋 PowerCo is supporting the Green Capital events with Volkswagen electric vehicles transporting officials from the European Commission and the Eurocities network. 🤝 PowerCo, with a special focus on sustainable battery production, aims to lead the electromobility hub in Southern Europe in collaboration with local entities, committed to #emobility and sustainability. Before, during and after the international conference the city will be filled with green activities and events, including: - The Net Zero Pathways conference and - Aalborg's 8th Sustainability Festival. When it comes to measuring, managing, reporting and reducing value chain emissions from marine sector companies… there’s a very limited selection of ESG software that can do this well, and produce complete robust data while saving a teams time and resources. So we’re delighted that the SEAOtool was shortlisted for an award at the Smart Sustainable Marina Rendezvous in Monaco last week. The SEAOtool is a carbon accounting platform designed specifically for the marine industry. Its built to make the process of carbon accounting and reporting easier for marine sector companies.. as well as accounting for the notoriously difficult scope 3. Its rather unique in its structure of being built around the marine sector specifically. We’re very proud of this platform and how it collates very specific marine related emissions factors, that are scattered in databases and papers, and puts in it a structure that makes sense to the user.
