Wow! This is #venturecapital invested in #research on a massive scale. And Arena BioWorks investors expect to reap 30 percent of the profits. "In an unmarked laboratory stationed between the campuses of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a splinter group of #scientists is hunting for the next billion-dollar drug. The group, bankrolled with $500 million from some of the wealthiest families in American business, has created a stir in the world of #academia by dangling seven-figure paydays to lure highly credentialed #university #professors to a for-profit bounty hunt. Its self-described goal: to avoid the blockages and paperwork that slow down the traditional paths of #scientificresearch at #universities and #pharmaceutical companies, and discover scores of new drugs (at first, for #cancer and #brain #disease) that can be produced and sold quickly. In confidential materials provided to investors and others, Arena describes itself as “a privately funded, fully independent, public good.” #highereducation #highered The New York Times #scienceandtechnology #biomedicalresearch #innovation

Technical Project Manager | Data-Driven Strategist | Customer-Centric Leader | Cross-Functional Collaborator
I recently came across a thought-provoking post that prompted me to reflect on my own journey out of academia. It inspired me to share some insights that I hope will resonate with PhD students, postdocs, and individuals in the midst of transitioning out of academia. Every experience—whether it's a setback, a challenge, or a triumph—is a valuable data point that you can use to craft a story, or narrative, about your life. Just like with any story, you change your narrative based on your audience (e.g., interviewer, job presentation, networking opportunity, etc.). And just like the experiments and techniques that you spent years mastering to tell a scientific story, telling your own story in different ways will take practice and time. Remember, be authentic to your core values. Authenticity is magnetic. Reflecting on my own journey, I've faced moments where it seemed like the years spent pursuing my PhD were wasted after I left academia. However, after deeper reflection, I realized that every challenge and every setback I experienced has contributed to my growth and resilience. If given the chance to do it differently, I wouldn't change a thing. Transitioning out of academia can feel overwhelming. But remember, your story is being written at this very moment in the present — and you hold the pen. Just like with your experiments, you won't fully understand your journey until you've lived through it and taken the time to reflect on your experiences. It's OK to be vulnerable. It's OK to have flaws. You are simply a mosaic that has yet to know how to arrange your own self to become a magnificent masterpiece. Each broken piece may be uninteresting on it's own, but put together in a creative way creates your story. Accept your vulnerabilities. You can't make the weak parts of yourself strong without recognizing and accepting their weakness in the first place. Lastly, don't feel like you have to navigate this journey alone. Reach out for support, whether it's from peers, mentors, or support networks. You are not alone in your struggles. Finding inspiration from other people's stories can help you learn how to take your own perceived weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Or, to use the mosaic analogy, shape and place your own broken pieces in a way that you couldn't have figured out on your own. I encourage you to share your own experiences and insights in the comments below. Let's continue to support and uplift each other as we navigate this journey together. And remember, your story is still being written—make it a powerful one. Please feel free to send a LinkedIn request and/or DM me for a chat. I'd be happy to speak more specifically about ways I transitioned out of academia.
