As NHS Confed says in its latest report, fundamental, system wide change is indeed needed to scale up pockets of best practice into a new neighbourhood health service. Interesting focus on investment in capital assets – just last week we were speaking to a pioneering service transformation lead who’s offering one-stop-shop community hubs that are cutting waiting times, and improving patient outcomes, but can’t cater for all conditions without the physical space to do so. You also need the right people in place to deliver the service, and we will be pushing for community services – including rehab - to get a renewed focus from funding to commissioning and incentivising. Today the Alliance released its 18th Community Checkup Report, offering a trusted, comprehensive view into the quality and cost of health care in Washington with an emphasis on equity. This year, we brought together our analyses on equity into one report to show how where you live in Washington impacts the quality and cost of care you receive. New for 2024, we released a blending tool that allows users to rank medical groups, counties and Accountable Communities of Health based on preference toward quality or cost. We have also updated all our scores for dozens of performance measures and refreshed our highlights from Variations in Health Care Quality to Total Cost of Care with the latest data. Community participation in Primary Healthcare (PHC) is a cornerstone of building a robust and effective health system. It goes beyond a mere involvement; it's about empowering communities to actively contribute to their own well-being. This approach recognizes that communities are not passive recipients but vital partners in shaping healthcare delivery. When communities actively engage in PHC, they become co-creators of their health destiny. This involvement fosters a deeper understanding of local health challenges and allows for the development of context-specific solutions. It's a collaborative process where the knowledge and insights of community members merge with the expertise of healthcare providers, creating a more holistic and culturally competent approach to healthcare. Community participation is the key focus of the #MakeOurHospitalWork Campaign. When we say communities most times many people think we are talking about rural communities. No! As Community Healthcare Workers, we often explore innovative ways to communicate the importance of inclusive and accessible healthcare. On12th of Decemeber 2023, the Federal Government through the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Development, stated that the country is working on creating about 17,000 new primary healthcare across the country as a part of the government's responsibility towards the country's Universal health coverage. While this is a great feat, my thoughts as a health communicator and advocate of a functional health system are on functionality of the facilities. One of the major challenges we are facing in the country when it comes to access to healthcare is out-of-pocket expenditure, low number of health workers (effect of the Japa syndrome ), and lack of most healthcare equipment. Most of the time what we see is the building of a health facility, from the outside we admire it and in many cases, the government puts a ribbon across the building, and on the day of launching it is carried in the media across the country, but nobody asks the question: does the hospital have a doctor? what's the total number of healthcare professionals employed to man the newly launched health facility? do they have community health officers? CHEWS? JCHEWS? The Ward Health System Implementation Strategy of 2021 mandated that every primary healthcare should have at least 26 healthcare workers inclusive of a doctor. Does the facility meet these requirements? We can't say our hospitals are working if we are not ready to follow the policies that we have all adopted as a roadmap for improved functionality if implemented. #healthcommunications #MakeOurHospitalWork
