Senior Vice President | MedTech and Digital Health Strategist | MSK and Women's Health Thought Leader
It’s #MSKMonday and I am here to talk about the public ortho markets. DePuy Synthes, as part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech was one of the first to kick-off Q2 earnings reporting season which will see many of its peers reading out in the coming several weeks, some as late as early August. DePuy reported 2.1% sales growth relative to Q2 of last year, and 3.2% compared to the prior period. https://lnkd.in/e5NbXxDM On the one hand – we are likely through the post-covid bolus and the massive growth rates we have seen over the last several years will likely subside. On the other hand, some of DePuy’s closest peers, have been posting high single digit, and some (we won’t name names but we all know who) even hitting double digit growth. So in the coming weeks – where these peers land will show whether the whole market is cooling off equally, or whether we are continuing to see share shifts in a historical oligopoly market. Zimmer Biomet Stryker Smith+Nephew Enovis What will we see in the spine market where mergers have re-shaped the field? Where profitability has been impossible to come by as distributors continue to wield outsize power in access to surgeons? Globus Medical Alphatec Spine SeaSpine Medtronic Will big bets like Globus Medical’s Excelsius approval in TKA and its new knee system pay off by making a dent? https://lnkd.in/eyvuSdg5 Keep your eyes and ears peeled…

Today, we’re bringing you acquisition, FDA, and technology news for your Tuesday morning. Stryker has completed its acquisition of SERF SAS, a French joint replacement company, from Menix. This acquisition strengthens Stryker's presence in Europe and expands its global joint replacement portfolio, aiming to offer a wider range of patient-enhanced implant options. With over 50 years of expertise, SERF SAS is known for innovations like the Dual Mobility Cup. Mathieu Badard, VP and GM of Stryker's Joint Replacement division in Europe, expressed excitement about merging portfolios to increase patient access to cutting-edge joint replacement solutions. https://lnkd.in/gqF6T4Kb The FDA announced that Abiomed is updating the instructions for use (IFU) of its Impella Left Sided Blood Pumps due to the risk of pump catheters perforating the left ventricle wall, potentially causing serious injuries or death, with 129 reported serious injuries and 49 deaths so far. The affected products include Impella 2.5, Impella CP, Impella CP with SmartAssist, Impella 5.0, Impella 5.5 with SmartAssist, and Impella LD. Adverse effects may include left ventricle perforation, hypertension, lack of blood flow, and death. Abiomed issued an Urgent Medical Device Correction letter on December 27, 2023, instructing affected customers to follow new warnings and procedures, such as careful positioning of the pump catheter during procedures, using imaging during catheter advancement, special care in high-risk patients or during CPR, reviewing updated IFU warnings, and informing relevant personnel and facilities. https://lnkd.in/gFkS38jT Researchers at the The University of Queensland, led by Professor Jason Roberts, conducted a study on accelerated antibiotic effectiveness for sepsis patients in ICUs using dosing software in the DIRECT study. Patients received efficient treatment in half the time, leading to quicker recovery, improved care quality, cost savings, and increased bed availability. By swiftly identifying bacteria and tailoring doses, the team reduced ICU stays and expenses, benefiting both adults and children across four Brisbane hospitals. Associate Professor Adam Irwin highlighted the study's significance in enhancing infection treatment accuracy, supported by funding from MRFF Rapid Applied Research Translation Programme Grants. Published in Intensive Care Medicine, the research promises better outcomes for critically ill patients. https://lnkd.in/gB8-3ide #MedTechNews #MedicalDevices #HealthcareInnovation #MedTechIndustry #HealthTech #HealthcareTechnology #MedDeviceNews #HealthcareNews #MedTechTrends
