I am proud to share the news of our strategic partnership with Orim Energy, which reflects our continued efforts to supply the maritime shipping market with long-term low carbon solutions. Combining VARO Energy's biofuels trading capabilities with Orim Energy’s bunkering and logistics capabilities will ensure we meet growing demand for blended biofuels for deep-sea transportation from Europe. This partnership will: · Provide shipping customers in Europe’s largest port, Rotterdam, with B30 (30% biofuels blended 70% fuel oil) · Help decarbonise the shipping industry and support IMO’s (International Maritime Organization) GHG emission reduction targets to reduce the total annual GHG emissions from shipping by at least 20% by 2030 and at least 70% by 2050, compared with 2008 levels · Help meet our customers’ demand for biofuels, which is growing rapidly · Build on VARO’s long-standing presence in Rotterdam and support the growth of our biofuels business As EU regulations and the IMO’s GHG emission targets come into force, the market for B30 is expected to grow rapidly, and this partnership positions us well to meet the increased demand. VARO Energy and Orim Energy have announced a strategic partnership aimed at providing biofuels to shipping customers in the Port of Rotterdam and the wider Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. This collaboration supports the decarbonization efforts of maritime transportation and inland shipping in Northern Europe, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by at least 20% by 2030 and 70% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. With the current demand for Fuel Oil in ARA standing at approximately 14 million tonnes per year, the market for B30, a blend of 70% Fuel Oil and 30% biofuels, is expected to grow rapidly with the support of new EU regulations. 📢 bp agrees to take full ownership of its Brazilian #biofuels joint venture, acquiring Bunge’s 50% interest. High-returning transaction will allow bp to realise synergies and continue to grow the business. JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Malaysia) Limited and Sumitomo Corporation have joined forces in a landmark investment agreement with Strategic Biofuels for the Louisiana Green Fuels BECCS project, marking a significant stride in sustainable energy initiatives. Together, they are forming the 'Magnolia Sustainable Energy Partners' consortium to oversee and invest in this transformative venture. Scheduled for commercial operations in 2029, the Louisiana-based plant, helmed by Strategic Biofuels, will boast a production capacity of 32 million gallons per annum. The project's innovative approach converts woody biomass waste into valuable resources such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Renewable Naphtha, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability in the aviation sector. Sumitomo's subsidiary, Sumitomo Corporation of Americas (SCOA), had previously inked a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Strategic Biofuels in February, signaling a strategic shift towards SAF production. This strategic pivot aligns with global sustainability goals and underscores Sumitomo's commitment to renewable energy advancements. Hunt Guillot & Associates (HGA), engaged by Strategic Biofuels, is leading the project's design and development, encompassing a biorefinery and a biomass-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) capabilities. While awaiting permits from the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources, the project remains on track to revolutionize sustainable energy production. We have had announcements from Shell and BP have announced the scaling back of SAF projects in the last few weeks which calls into question not the legitimacy of SAF projects but choosing only those with the best economics. Shell have exited a planned renewable hydrogen-based SAF project in Sweden with Vattenfall despite having a $87mn EU Innovation Fund grant and announced that they will temporarily halt work on the Pernis biofuels plants. They cite higher construction costs as the reason. BP have similarly announced the scaling back of SAF and renewable diesel projects. They have not yet indicated which, but they currently have plans in Europe at Lingen, Gelsenkirchen, Rotterdam and Castellon. Despite this announcement BP have indicated they will take full ownership of their 50/50 JV with Bunga Bioenergia, a Brazilian biofuels company where BP see potential new SAF and biogas projects. The common story is not so much that biofuels investment is over but more a rationalisation of where and at what cost. There are still many proposed SAF plants in Europe but we hear that the economics are challenging for sites to reach required returns on investment. With EU regulations starting at 2% next year and rapidly ramping up, analysis shows an ever-increasing shortfall. The red line on the chart below, shows the negative net balance. For supply to grow, the economics in Europe or outside the region have to be reasonable to justify investing. To make the economics work the price of SAF will have to increase.

Shell Nederland Raffinaderij B.V., a subsidiary of Shell plc, has announced a temporary halt on the construction of its 820,000 tonnes per year biofuels facility at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, Netherlands. This pause aims to address project delivery challenges and ensure future competitiveness amidst current market conditions. Huibert Vigeveno, Shell’s Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions Director, explained, "Temporarily pausing on-site construction now will allow us to assess the most commercial way forward for the project." He emphasized Shell’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with low-carbon fuels playing a crucial role in the company's strategy to help both Shell and its customers profitably decarbonize. Vigeveno added, "We will continue to use shareholder capital in a measured and disciplined way, delivering more value with fewer emissions." The biofuels facility, which received its final investment decision in September 2021, is designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel from waste. This strategic move is aligned with Shell CEO Wael Sawan’s focus on profitability since taking office last year. Under Sawan’s leadership, Shell has also scrapped hydrogen projects and pulled out of various markets to concentrate on core operations. This decision comes in the wake of similar announcements by bp, which has paused the development of two biofuel plants in Germany and the United States earlier this week. These moves reflect the broader industry trend of reassessing biofuels projects in response to shifting market dynamics and financial pressures.
