Despite the fun, it's crucial to be aware of the risks and prepare for safety. Drownings are on the rise, with nearly 5,000 deaths annually, and they are the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4 (CDC). Basic swimming and water safety skills are critical in preventing drownings. Organizations like the American Red Cross, local YMCAs, and USA Swimming offer affordable or free lessons. While water activities can be a fun way to spend time with loved ones, it can also be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. We have compiled a list of tips to keep you and your family safe around water! TIP #1 from lifeguard Jim: "Never swim alone and make sure there is a lifeguard on duty." Today is World Drowning Prevention Day. Drowning is a preventable tragedy. Let's take a moment to recognize the importance of water safety and the steps we can take to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Here are the five things we can do to prevent drownings: 🌊 Teach Swimming Skills Early: Enroll children in swimming lessons to build their confidence and competence in the water. Understanding basic swimming skills can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. 🌊 Learn CPR & Basic Rescue Skills: Knowing how to perform CPR and basic rescue techniques can save lives in emergencies. Take a class and be prepared to act quickly and confidently. 🌊 Supervise Children Closely: Never leave children unattended around water. Active supervision is key, whether they're in a pool, at the beach, or near any body of water. Assign a dedicated water watcher to ensure their safety. 🌊 Install Barriers & Use Life Jackets: Use barriers like pool fences with self-latching gates to prevent unsupervised access. Ensure that everyone wears properly fitting life jackets when boating or participating in water activities. 🌊 Be Aware of Water Conditions: Always check the conditions before entering an open body of water. Be mindful of currents, tides, and weather changes. Follow safety signs and warnings, and avoid swimming alone. AquaMissions exists to save lives through life saving water safety education and swimming instruction. Every child is deserving of these basic life skills. We are building a model for school-based instruction to reach and teach students. AquaMissions advocates for school-based swim instruction in grade school. #DrowningPrevention #WaterSafety #WorldDrowningPreventionDay #LearntoSwim

Part six of our educational series with Karen Baildon: Did you know that over half of the kids starting in grade one have very limited drowning prevention skills and basic swimming skills? There is another 25% of children who hold no drowning prevention skills. That's a staggering 75% of our four and five year olds that do not hold lifesaving, self saving, drowning prevention skills. Did you know that for every drowning fatality, there is another 3 to 4 children admitted hospital for need drowning incidents? These numbers terrify me. We know that our under-fives are the most vulnerable in our community for drowning. We have an obligation to make sure that our under-fives are learning self saving drowning prevention skills. This guy loves summer and swimming, as do most of us. We don’t want to be a buzzkill, but please remember just a few quick pool safety tips: • Always supervise children and pets near the pool, even if they know how to swim. • Install a fence around the pool area with a self-closing gate to prevent unauthorized access. • Keep lifesaving equipment, like a ring buoy or shepherd's hook, near the pool at all times. • Teach everyone in the household basic water safety skills, including how to float and call for help. • Avoid running or horseplay around the pool to minimize the risk of slips and falls. #TrustPointInsuranceandRealEstate #picoftheweek

Swimming lessons are an essential layer of protection, but layers only work when used together. To keep our little ones safer, we need to combine multiple safety measures, including: - Barriers: Secure pools and water areas properly using > 48-inch fencing with a self-closing and self-latching gate. - Active Supervision (3Cs - Close, Constant, Capable): Always keep a watchful eye on children in or near the water. - Water Competency: It’s never too early to get children in Swim Lessons! - Life Jackets: Use them when necessary, especially in open waters or when boating. - Emergency Preparedness: Know what to do in an emergency or if you see someone in distress in the water. Together, these 5 layers offer multiple points of protection for our loved ones. Let's ensure every splash is a safer one! #5layersofprotection #watersafetymonth #drownalliance #ndpa

Pool floaties are not a layer of protection for your child when it comes to drowning prevention. ❌ We know pool floaties can be fun and colorful, but it's important to understand why pool floaties are not a safe choice for kiddos. In addition to being prone to breaking or slipping while in use, floaties also teach poor posture and incorrect swimming habits. Depending on the child, floaties can either cause a false sense of confidence, leading children to think that they can swim independently when they're not ready yet, or they can instill fear of swimming without them. Both of these scenarios can have negative effects on children. So swap out those pool floaties for a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and add a key layer of protection by enrolling in swim lessons 🧡

Summer means more hours in the sun and more time in the water, but it also marks peak trauma season from Memorial Day to Labor Day. According to recent American Red Cross data, 10 people die every day from unintentional drowning, and on average two of them are 14 years or younger. With the Boise River float season just around the corner and all the area lakes, reservoirs and natural bodies of water brimming, we want to offer up some quick tips for staying safe by the water this summer: Keep to the buddy system: Swimming alone isn’t fun or safe. Find a friend to swim with. Children should also be constantly supervised when around water, even if a lifeguard is on duty. Keep an eye out for signs: Safe and unsafe areas for swim are marked and with good reason. Stay within the designated areas and aware of posted signs and warnings. Hydrate the right way: Alcohol before or during water fun impairs judgment and coordination. Buckle up: Whether you’re an expert or beginner swimmer, a properly fitted life jacket should be worn for all boating, tubing and water sport fun. Enroll in swim lessons or a water safety class: You’re never too old to learn to swim, especially when it means saving a life. Find a water safety class near you or online by visiting https://lnkd.in/gVA8sybw #WaterSafety #Traumaseason
