One of the best ways to support at-risk bird populations is with data. By monitoring weather conditions, recording species and tracking trends, we can see which conservation efforts are the most effective at reversing the declines of Britain's resident and overseas visitors. George and Andy are our two highly skilled, licensed volunteer bird ringers who have been surveying the birdlife in Little Wittenham Woods for the past two years for a project looking at the breeding success of the bird population there. Read how recent local weather and regional climate patterns have been impacting bird life in the woods, and what action we're taking to boost biodiversity.👇 https://lnkd.in/ehxAZ5h7

Reintroduction is a conservation tool that can return a species to its historical habitat, restoring meaningful ecological connections. A 2022 USFWS assessment concluded that sea otter reintroduction to their historical range would benefit marine ecosystems and play a crucial role in helping the population recover. Two methods exist for sourcing individual animals for a potential sea otter reintroduction: 1) translocating wild-caught, free-ranging sea otters to one or more new sites; 2) transporting surrogate-reared or rehabilitated sea otters from a facility like a zoo or aquarium to one or more new sites. Both methods come with various risks and advantages. How would a potential reintroduction then proceed? Considerable work is needed to identify the scientific, logistical, and socioeconomic aspects of a potential sea otter reintroduction and to initiate positive engagement with stakeholders and communities who might be affected. The sea otters! What a cute species 🤗 Here is a good summary of a reintroduction process (the factors involved in it). An interesting point here that few studies mention is the analysis of the socioeconomic aspects. Great work and example! #animalreintroduction #marinelife #seaotter #wildlife

Interesting article to explore more about the best ways to measure the monetary value of biodiversity. In the final chapter of our latest article collection ‘Quantifying the value of nature’, my colleagues developed a pro-bono valuation toolkit for The Wildlife Trusts. The toolkit aims to help The Wildlife Trusts more easily place an economic value on their conservation activities and advocate for biodiversity to be incorporated into economic decision-making at the highest level. Italy has adopted the #NationalBiodiversityStrategy 2023. The new measure that defines guidelines for the conservation, protection, and promotion of our country’s biodiversity and ecosystems, which are home to a wealth of animal and plant species. The plan represents Italy’s contribution to the international goal to restore and protect all ecosystems on the planet by 2050, and will take place through a series of tangible actions on the territory Read more on #TernaLightbox ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d9DUSiu2

International Day of Biological Diversity, 22.05.2024 🦁 The unrestricted exploitation of wildlife has led to the disappearance of many animal species at an alarming rate, destroying Earth's biological diversity and upsetting the ecological balance. 📢 The theme of this year is “Be part of the Plan” 💪 This is a call to action to encourage governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, non-governmental organizations, lawmakers, businesses, and individuals to highlight the ways in which they are supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan. 🌲 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, and 3/4 of our environment has been significantly altered by humans. Everyone has a role to play. Do you want to be #PartOfThePlan? Apply now at https://lnkd.in/eViqWcC2 #ExpeditionScience #MakingScienceHappen

🐙 Divers visiting the Kelp Blue's cultivated kelp forests in Namibia often discover they are teeming with life. But have you ever wondered how we monitor this underwater diversity? 🔍 The answer is #eDNA technology! We are using NatureMetrics' environmental DNA sampling technology to identify the species inhabiting these kelp habitats. As global appreciation for marine ecosystems grows, our partnership with Naturemetrics provides invaluable insights into which fish, crustaceans, mammals, or micro-organisms live among the majestic kelp. 🐚 Environmental DNA is the genetic material organisms shed into their environment, such as skin cells, mucus, or faeces. We collect water samples, pass them through a filter, and let NatureMetrics analyse the eDNA to detect the presence of specific species, without having to directly observe or capture them. We have already identified more than 500 unique species in the kelp forests! We are proud to be featured as a case study of NatureMetrics Nature Intelligence in Coastal Ecosystems project. Read more about our case study here: https://lnkd.in/eE2uqBsm #biodiversity #namibia #kelp #marineecosystems #coastalecology
Tracking progress across vast coastal habitats using traditional methods proved nearly impossible...until eDNA. Scalable solutions are needed to establish baselines, track outcomes, and adaptively manage these habitats. Global conservation powerhouses like the Wildlife Conservation Society, Ocean Conservation Trust, Blue finance, Kelp Forest Foundation, Kelp Blue, University of Sussex and Worldrise Onlus are already using eDNA technology provided by NatureMetrics to transform their approach. Discover how eDNA generates comprehensive, actionable insights to inform policy, guide restoration efforts, expand Marine Protected Areas, and monitor sustainable Blue Economy initiatives across these invaluable ecosystems. 🌊 🚀DOWNLOAD NOW: https://lnkd.in/da2xT97s #NatureIntelligence #CoastalEcosystems #ClimateAction #BiodiversityMonitoring #eDNATechnology #eDNA

On this #WorldHabitatDay, take a look at EU’s endangered habitats 🏞️ Europe has a stunning diversity of wild animals, plants and habitats, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world. However, over 1/4 of Europe’s animal species are at risk of extinction and 81% of the EU habitats are in poor status ⚠️ To protect biodiversity, the 🇪🇺 #NatureRestoration Law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and ultimately all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
