📝Novel topological properties of matter emerge from an ultra-cold atom-cavity system In the recent study published in Physical Review Letters, ICFO researcher Joana Fraxanet, led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein, in collaboration with Daniel González Cuadra from Institut für Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation (IQOQI) in Innsbruck, Alexandre Dauphin from PASQAL and Luca Barbiero from Politecnico di Torino, report on a readily available experimental protocol to induce symmetry-protected higher-order topology through a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism in an atom-cavity system. Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics is a fascinating discipline, because it allows us to create processes that seem stolen from science fiction, but have an indisputable merit: they work. I'm talking about thermoelectric generation without moving parts, liquids that solidify instantly due to the application of a magnetic field, control at the molecular level of the deposition of materials, melting of metals with levitation to avoid contact with the walls of the crucible, pumping and mixing of liquids without moving parts, sails for the propulsion of space vehicles and ever new applications that researchers with particularly vivid imagination continually create. The common thread is the combination of Fluid Dynamics with Electromagnetism, conducting fluids that move within a magnetic field, and it appears surprising how such different applications are modeled by the same system of equations. We meet this year for the 13th edition of the Pamir in Carrie-le-Rouet, on the Côte d'Azur. It will be a pleasure to meet old friends as well as new ideas and new talents who have decided to become part of this Community https://lnkd.in/dEbdvRcB

I am very excited to share our recent publication in PNAS! For this research, I designed a new granular material, which is very compressible. The forces inside such granular packings remain low, which leads to great flowing and impact absorption properties. https://lnkd.in/etYendry https://lnkd.in/e_epMAWb Our study blurs the boundary between metamaterials, complex fluids, suspensions, and granular media and thus opens up the fields of granular metamaterials and metafluids. I am excited to share the first published results from my PhD project! Here we cover the detailed characterization of organic glass scintillator (OGS) bars and their potential for a range monitoring system in proton therapy. Check it out here!
A new paper by the NOVO Collaboration is out: https://lnkd.in/dscVpM8x The paper explores the most critical properties of bar-shaped OGSs (Organic Glass Scintillators) for applications to range verification in proton therapy, specifically in the NOVCoDA prototype that will be used for simultaneous imaging of the spatial distributions of fast neutrons and prompt gamma-rays. The first author of the paper is Joey Turko who deserves a strong acknowledgement of the hard work put into data collection, data analyses as well as the writing of the manuscript. I cannot thank enough all our colleagues at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) who put in a great effort to finalize this work and get the results published. Also much acknowledged is Patrick Feng of Sandia National Laboratories for providing us with the OGS samples used in these experiments.
