From 2% To 98% Food Waste Recycling South Korea's food waste recycling program remains one of the most advanced and effective globally. France, for example, has recently made composting food mandatory, and cities like New York have imposed similar rules, but these efforts are not yet as comprehensive or successful as South Korea's nationwide system. But, again, question remains the same How did South Korea achieve this? ● Government Initiatives: ➡️ 2005: Landfill 𝗯𝗮𝗻 for food waste ➡️ 2013: 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 food waste recycling program ➡️ 𝗣𝗮𝘆-𝗮𝘀-𝘆𝗼𝘂-𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 system implementation ● Technological Advancements: ➡️ 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 and RFID technology ➡️ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 for compost, fertilizer, and biogas ● Public Participation: ➡️ Food recycling is considered 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 for South Koreans ➡️ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 with waste separation and disposal rules ● Results and Impact: ---> Food waste recycling increased from 2% (1995) to 95-98% (present). ---> Average household food waste reduced to 33 kg per person per year. #FoodWaste Follow me (Harshal) for exciting #ESG and #Zerocarbon trivia. 🌏 September 29: International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste! 🌏 Globally, we waste 1.05 billion tons of food, equal to 6 billion meals per day🥘 and 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions 🏭. Food waste isn't just a problem in the global North—Southeast Asia wastes 70 kg/capita/year, even surpassing Northern Europe’s 69 kg 😱. Worse, much of it ends up in landfills, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas 80x more potent than CO2 ⚠. In SweepSmart, we have the expertise on how to collect, separate and process organic waste from source-separated or mixed waste streams to turn it into compost, which can be used as a soil enhancer for the farming sector 🪴. In particular, we did a project for Delterra in which we modelled 6 different scenarios and (re)designed 20 sites to handle organic waste. Also, we are developing a large-scale mixed waste sorting facility with Recovered Indonesia which will reduce 80-85% waste to landfill. B3 waste refers to toxic, hazardous and/or hard-to-decompose materials which are often found aplenty in and around oil palm plantations—from plastic packaging used for pesticides and fertilizers, to cigarette stubs, drinking bottles, and more. ❌ For farmers following sustainability certification processes, knowledge on managing B3 waste is a must, especially since it constitutes one of the major assessment aspects in sustainability certification. 💡 ✔️ Independent farmers assisted by Solidaridad under the second phase of the NISCOPS project in Indonesia receive a special session on B3 waste and its management. The session features explanations and demonstrations on how to handle, store, and dispose B3 waste properly, so as not to pollute the environment and not endanger health. Farmers are also reminded about the importance of maintaining their health and safety while working in the plantations. 👷♀️ 👷♂️ Solidaridad Indonesia | Yeni Fitriyanti | Edy Hartono | Suksma Ratri #SustainablePalmOil #NISCOPS #WasteManagement #OccupationalHealthAndSafety

🌍 In March 2024, Ethiopia adopted the National Plastic Waste Management Strategy and Roadmap (2024-2034), a major step towards addressing plastic waste. With €25 million in plastics technology imports in 2021, Ethiopia is one of East Africa's largest importers, generating 380,000 tons of plastic waste annually, but only 6% is recycled. 🌱 Recognizing the policy gap, NCA Ethiopia, in partnership with PETCO and the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), initiated discussions in 2022 for the development of the national policy. With support from Norway's Kavlifondet, NCA supported the designing of the ten-year National Plastic Strategy and Roadmap. This initiative also introduced two key policy tools: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and regulations for Food-Grade Recycled PET (rPET) packaging. #Sustainability #PlasticWaste #Ethiopia

As of the start of 2024, organic waste recycling has become mandatory in France under new 'compost obligatoire' rules. Food waste is responsible for around 16% of the total emissions from the EU food system, and this new law goes further than previous initiatives to ensure households and businesses in France separate and recycle their food waste to reduce the harmful emissions from sending this waste to landfill. https://lnkd.in/e__ByDC7 #InTheNews #FoodWaste #OrganicWaste #Environment #France #FoodWasteRecycling #Recycling #GHGEmissions

This month marked an important milestone for our Responsible Sourcing Initiative as we reached a significant point with our first Viet Nam kick-off workshop in collaboration with UNDP in Viet Nam and DUYTAN Recycling. With support from HP, we convened stakeholders from the plastics industry to address challenges faced by informal waste workers, who are pivotal in combating plastic pollution. Discussions centered on the initiative's objectives, its relevance to Viet Nam, value chain challenges, partner experiences in implementing waste worker-centric solutions, and a site visit to Duy Tan’s suppliers. The two-day event concluded with a closed-door session where we discussed baseline findings and actionable strategies aimed at addressing key challenges such as social stigma and income instability. We look forward to providing valuable insights and collectively working towards enhancing the livelihoods of around 10,000 waste pickers in Viet Nam. 🌍 Navigating EU Legislation: What the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) Means for South Africa's Recyclers and Producers As the European Union moves forward with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the ripple effects will undoubtedly be felt across global markets, including here in South Africa. At Extrupet Group, we recognize the importance of staying ahead of such international regulations, as they not only influence export markets but also set new benchmarks for sustainability practices worldwide. The PPWR aims to significantly reduce packaging waste and increase the use of recycled materials, creating both challenges and opportunities for recyclers and producers. For South African stakeholders, this means adapting to stricter standards while seizing the chance to innovate and align with global sustainability goals. Our ongoing efforts to enhance our recycling technologies and processes are more crucial than ever, ensuring that we remain competitive and compliant in an evolving regulatory landscape. Collaboration with industry partners like PETCO(tag) is essential in sharing knowledge and driving forward practices that benefit both the environment and the economy. As we look to the future, staying informed and agile in response to international regulations like the PPWR will be key to maintaining our leadership in the recycling sector. Africa Trend: The Circular Economy in Africa In September 2024, the Africa Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA) held the Tenth Special Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment conference in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, to discuss the sustainability of Africa’s future and possible opportunities to implement a circular economy. One topic brought forward involves the implementation of an Africa-wide rPET standard, which would significantly benefit the environment, waste production, and interregional trade. rPET stands for recycled polyethylene terephthalate, a recycled plastic material with diverse applications, but its most beneficial use is in the food packaging industry. This is because the increased use of recycled material enforces the virtuous cycle that is core to a circular economy, as well as requiring less energy and producing less CO2 compared to virgin PET production. Therefore, PET waste can be traded between countries to produce rPET, which subsequently reduces environmental degradation, extractive practices, and pollution. This is a significant step in the right direction towards improving Africa’s environmental footprint and implementing standards and policies aimed at sustainable processes for future generations. Twenty years ago, South Korea was disposing of 98% of its #foodwaste. Today, that number has flipped—98% of food waste is now transformed into 🌱 compost, 🐄 animal feed, or ⚡ energy. How did they do it? By banning food scraps from landfills and requiring everyone to separate food waste from other trash. Citizens even pay for the service through fees 💸 and fines 🚫. South Korea's system isn't perfect, though. Sorting food waste can be tricky—🥚 eggs, 🐔 chicken, and 🧅 onions are compostable, but their shells, bones, and roots aren't. Mistakes in sorting can jam recycling facilities 🚨. Plus, farmers are hesitant to use waste based feed for livestock or fertilizer due to the smell 👃 and excess sodium 🧂. The best solution? Reducing food waste in the first place—cutting down on what's left on the plate 🍽️ makes the biggest impact. While it's not without its flaws, South Korea’s initiative is a major step forward in tackling food waste 🌎, setting an example that could inspire similar solutions globally 🌍.

In India, 40% of the food wasted is equivalent to nearly 92,000 crore/year. This is equivalent to nearly 1% of the GDP which is depleted in the form of food wastage in India. Each person in India wastes 55 kg of food per year as per UN Environment Programme's report. #food #foodwastage #savefood #recycle #environment
Reducing Food Waste – Gangman Style! Solid food waste in municipal landfills contributes approximately 58% of methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures and nearly a million premature deaths annually. To reduce the impact of food waste on the environment, South Korea has been pioneering several impactful measures such as: ✅ Banning all food waste in landfills since 2005 ✅ Stopped ocean dumping of water from food waste since 2013 ✅ Bins with scales that charge residents of high-tech building apartments for waste by weight ✅ Converting food waste into fertilizer, animal feed, biogas, and bio-oil. ✅ Charging households ~ $6/month for biodegradable bags, covering 60% of disposal costs in Seoul. 🏅 The result? 95% of food waste is now recycled, as compared to less than 2% in 1995 Despite this progress, South Koreans still waste more food per capita than Europeans and North Americans! If you'd like to know how you can reduce your kitchen waste with simple daily steps, send me a DM mentioning “Zero Waste Kitchen” and I’ll be happy to share a short presentation with tips on waste segregation, meal planning, home composting, preparing bio-enzymes, and repurposing food scraps! . . . #foodwaste #greenhousegases #landfill #methaneemissions #foodwaste #bioenzymes #LIPostingChallengeIndia #biodegradable #wastesegregation #SouthKorea #Seoul #ZeroWaste #recycle #reuse #repurpose
