🌍 Earlier this month (August), VillageReach and Lwala Community Alliance visited community health promoters (CHPs) in Migori County, Kenya. During the visit, we gained valuable insights into the challenges CHPs face in accessing and managing essential health products. We were inspired by the dedication of these frontline health workers as they received supplies and used them for early disease detection. Their commitment to improving community health through practical advice is commendable. Together, we're working to strengthen the supply chain for community health workers and ensure consistent access to vital health products. How can we improve access to basic health in rural areas of Sub Sahara Africa? 🤔 We partnered with Healthy Entrepreneurs to support Community Health Workers in becoming Community Health Entrepreneurs, where they receive training and are able to sell quality health products at a lower price. This does not only increase the sustainability of the program, but also increases the reach to the most isolated communities in Uganda. Founder & Team Lead at NOFMA | Regional Coordinator, Kenya Malaria Youth Corps (Northern Kenya) | SRHR Advocate | Digital & Public Health | Youth & Climate Advocate
Lack of access to healthcare services remains one of the biggest challenges in Northern Kenya, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Many communities face long distances, poor infrastructure, and limited health facilities, which prevent them from receiving timely medical attention. These barriers contribute to a higher disease burden and poor health outcomes, especially among vulnerable populations like women, children, and the elderly. It’s clear that more needs to be done. We are calling on partners, government agencies, and stakeholders to come together to support initiatives aimed at bridging the healthcare gap in these regions. By collaborating, we can bring essential services closer to those who need them most and improve the overall health and well-being of our communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact. Let's ensure no one is left behind. #HealthcareForAll #NorthernKenya #CommunityHealth

Community systems strengthening is an important step towards #healthequity. Interesting insights about experiences of community health care workers in Kenya.
Critical role of Community Health Promoters… They live and work within the communities they serve. In one of the poorest and least developed areas in Kenya, I met one who mentioned that she walks around with batteries and razor blades. She more often than not meets pregnant women on the road as they have to cover distances of more than twenty kilometres to access a health facility. In this continuing series in #SundayNation #WeeklyReview we give a human face to Primary Healthcare. READ: Article link in comments. As showcased in similar discussions of #onehealthlenspodcast with Dr Supa Tunje and Simon Kigondu when she spoke of the plight of most of her patients in rural facilities. Very good vision of community health! The ability to respond to community health needs and be able to adapt as they evolve is the key to success for community health in phase with technological advances.
Thank you to Living Goods and Ministry of Health, Kenya for spearheading discussions on the progress made in professionalizing community health promoters in Kenya. Our Chief Programs Officer Robert Mutai highlighted the importance of sound technology, sustainable funding and strong partnerships to ensure the country's electronic community health information system, or eCHIS, continues to meet #communityhealth needs as they evolve. Tanzania Mainland🇹🇿 has 26 administrative regions each divided into 139 Districts, 184 councils ,3,926 Wards, 12318 Villages, 4263 Mtaa and 64384 rural hamlets. For the placement of 2 Community health workers for each kitongoji and Mtaa, the country requires 137,294 total community health workers. The demand is still high , as CHWs need to be people centred in which every community group should have his own CHWs Example: Bodaboda need to have their CHWs, community business groups need to have their CHWs etc. The future is convincing as this Integrated Community Health workers program in Tanzania will continue to upgrade the number of CHWs to meet full demands of the existing community. Exploring Community Health Worker Perspectives: Maternal and Child Health Care Implementation in Rwanda. Uncovering Barriers and Facilitators Through Qualitative Inquiry. This study explores the experiences of community health workers (CHWs) delivering maternal and child health (MCH) services in Rwanda. Through interviews and focus groups with 24 CHWs and supervisors, key facilitators like community trust and personal motivation were identified, while barriers such as long hours, limited resources, and low salaries were also highlighted. Understanding these factors can help improve MCH service delivery by addressing challenges and leveraging motivations among CHWs. https://lnkd.in/gQnPTSiS #GlobalHealth #PublicHealth #HealthForAll #Healthcare #GlobalWellness #HealthPolicy

Grace Thembo Mumbe, Chief Community Health Officer at MOH Zambia, highlights that even though community health workers are active in communities, if they and the communities do not understand climate change and its impact on health, there will be a rise in diseases, and there will be no resources to combat them. Grace sheds light on the urgent need for resources to build climate-resilient health systems in Zambia. Watch our video to see the challenges firsthand and understand the critical role of community health workers in addressing these issues. Join our free webinar titled “Strategic Investments in Primary Health Care for Climate-Resilient Health Systems” on 27th June 2024 at 1 PM EAT to find out how exactly we can achieve this with insights from a dynamic set of experts from a funder's perspective, a government’s perspective, a technical advisor's perspective, and, of course, from the community health workers themselves.
