Last May, fishery officers patrolling the Margaree River in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, encountered an individual angling and determined they were targeting Atlantic salmon during the recreational Atlantic salmon fishery closed time. In this area, the Atlantic salmon fishery opens on June 1. The annual closure is in place to allow overwintering salmon to return to sea and, later, return to the river to spawn. The individual was charged and convicted for multiple violations of the Fisheries Act and regulations. The most recent issue of ICSF International Collective in Support of Fishworkers's SAMUDRA Report features stories of coastal tenure -- people from Japan, to Senegal, to the Brazilian Amazon working together to determine how their small-scale fisheries are accessed and maintained. I'm thrilled to contribute the story of tenure in the U.S., of fishing rights that were once collective and community-based, then privatized and moved to industrial operations, and now, that we at Catch Together are working to bring back to the traditional stewards: Indigenous Peoples and local communities. https://lnkd.in/gjB9hArJ

The presence of super trawlers, like the one currently operating off the coast of Donegal, poses a severe threat to both local ecosystems and traditional fishing communities. It's time to prioritize sustainable fishing practices that protect our marine environments and support local livelihoods. #SaveOurSeas #SustainableFishing

BTT is researching the movements of the small, yet mighty bonefish larvae in The Bahamas. Further understanding of how bonefish populations are interconnected, island to island, will provide a roadmap for how best to protect the landing spots of these larvae and secure the future of these fisheries. Ultimately, this project aims to link important bonefish habitats—spawning sites, juvenile habitats, adult home ranges—to guide protection of important bonefish habitats, such as the designation of several national parks in 2015 and 2021, including those supporting popular fishing destinations on Grand Bahama and Abaco. Therefore, it is essential to unify the practice of its application and fill in the gaps as soon as possible. - Animals - a concept that combines livestock, pets, and wild animals - each species has different legal regulations. - Wild animals, including specially protected Red Data Book species, are the property of the people of Ukraine. And the state retains the right to control their maintenance - even if such animals have an owner. This is due to the special status of wild animals, which are part of natural ecosystems. - Due to the lack of knowledge about the existence of particular fees for the use of wild animals, local communities do not receive significant funds in their budgets and do not calculate the losses caused by the war. One wild bee costs 50 cents, and a hedgehog costs $5. - The need for knowledge about the distinction between general and particular use of wild animals makes it difficult to prosecute illegal hunting or fishing. 

From 5 December 2023 to 13 February 2024 stakeholders (fishers, environmental groups and the wider public) are asked to share evidence and views on the impact of commercial fishing on highly mobile species in offshore marine protected areas. For more, see https://lnkd.in/e_VK3y38

The Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO) Shetland inshore brown crab and scallop fishery demonstrates how it’s possible to fish sustainably while protecting sensitive seabed habitats at the same time. To try and ensure that their boats don’t damage the vulnerable local habitats, that are home to species like horse mussels and maerl (a delicate seaweed), the fishery constantly reviews which areas to avoid. And, vessels over 12 metres are all with Vessel Monitoring Systems, to enable the SSMO to better understand where the vessels are fishing. Thanks to a close collaboration between the fishery and Heriot-Watt University, the marine environment is better protected. Now, you can be assured that these fishermen are landing their catch with care, while avoiding sensitive habitats and species.
