We couldn’t support black owned businesses in HTX without heading over to @watersedgewinerytx ! This was our second time there and it was an absolute blast.           𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 5 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒄𝒌 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝑬𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝑯𝑻𝑿  ⬇️      🥂1. Hi everyone - this week, let's travel further east of Napa and turn our attention to one of the smaller sub-AVAs: Wild Horse Valley. If you've never heard of Wild Horse Valley, it's because there aren't a lot of wines made there. Sitting above the fog line, this is the coolest of all the AVAs and benefits from its proximity to San Pablo Bay. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay do well, and tend to have higher acidity do to the higher elevation. The fruit is mainly sold to other wineries. Situated on the edge of this AVA, Kenzo, is the closest winery that I can recommend - with a caveat. Pre-2020 wines from Kenzo were made by "the first lady of wine" Heidi Barrett. Those wines were fantastic. Unfortunately, per Wine Searcher, Heidi left Kenzo in 2022 over a dispute with the owners over releasing their 2020 reds, which she felt may have been impacted by smoke from the Glass fire. She wanted to make it clear that she did not make those wines. Marc Nanes, was Heidi's assistant and has taken over winemaking duties. Hopefully, he can continue their legacy of great wines. Insider Tip: If you see 2020 Napa reds on store shelves it's best to steer clear unless you can ensure the grapes were harvested before the Glass fire on Sept 27th, or they weren't subjected to the smoke.  #wealthandwine #financeandvino #financialadvisor

Today is National Champagne Day recognizing the wine that puts the pop in every New Year’s Eve celebration. Genuine champagne only comes from France’s Champagne region. French law protects where and how it is made. With some exceptions, only Champagne made according to set specifications and within the French region may label their wines using the term “Champagne.” Other foods and beverages fall under this type of protection in France and other parts of the world. Champagne is located northeast of Paris and provides ideal temperature and soil to produce the grapes required for Champagne. French law allows only eight varieties of grapes for the production of Champagne in the Champagne region. Primarily, the three grapes used to create Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Unlike other wines, Champagne ferments in the bottle allowing the vintner to trap the CO2 in the bottle. The bubbles give Champagne its effervescence.  While Champagne can be spendy, if you are looking for a little pop on New Year’s Eve, other varieties of sparkling wine are available from Italy, California, and even the South of France. They offer a sparkle that won’t put a fizzle in your pocketbook. My advice: go for Champagne tonight. 🤗🥂 Drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive.

2014 and 2015 Champagne: Chalk and cheese // Comparing two Champagne vintages that are in many ways polar opposites. How do the wines of a vintage produced in “classic” conditions compare to those from a year more in keeping with the new, warmer normal in Champagne? Essi Avellan MW is joined by Simon Field MW and Tom Hewson for a tasting that suggested the differences are more stylistic than qualitative. Champagne’s climate has changed over the past decades, from cool to temperate. Late-season, high-acid vintages are getting rare. Instead, we are witnessing more variability in weather conditions, shortening growth cycles, more sunshine, and drought. The cooler years of today might well be similar to the warmer years of the past, reaching proper ripeness seldom being a problem anymore. The consecutive vintages 2014 and 2015 are, in many ways, polar opposites. The 2014 displays a more classically cool wine profile, whereas the 2015 showcases the new climate’s effects for both good and ill. There is nothing more impressive than a large format bottle as the centrepiece of the Christmas table or as a fabulous gift for a friend or colleague. Wine ages more slowly than in smaller formats, allowing for further complexity and longevity over time. When you decide to toast ringing in the New Year with a glass of bubbly, do you know if it’s truly champagne or just sparkling white wine? Well on National Champagne Day, December 31st, we are going to pay tribute to champagne and give you some facts to help you know the difference. Champagne is thought of as the pinnacle of drinks to celebrate an important event or occasion. Dom Pierre Perignon, monk from the Champagne region of France is often credited with discovering the process of wine fermentation as it relates to weather in 1697 (you may recognize that name in the world of champagne). Some English folks claim it was created in 1662 in the Cotswolds when Christopher Merrett documented his process of putting bubbles into wine by adding sugar. True champagne comes from the French province of the same name and the four true styles are produced according to strict standards and their blends are made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, or Pinot Meunier grapes. Some champagnes are sweet, and some are dry, but they will typically have similar flavors, including hints of orange zest, apple, cherry or almond. The aging process sometimes gives it a bit of a strange aroma that contains hints of toast or cheese-rind.
