🙏 A big thanks to everyone who joined our Joint In-House and Large Firm D&I Forum on extended pay gap reporting last week! 🗨 We had some great, honest discussions about the current work and our future plans. Since gender pay gap reporting became mandatory in 2017, it’s time to expand our focus to include LGBTQ+, disability, ethnicity, and socio-economic background. It's encouraging to see organisations proactively adopting this extended reporting. 📈 Leading the way in pay gap reporting is crucial for our profession. Effective reporting and action on the findings are key to representing the diverse community we serve. We also clarified the difference between pay gaps and equal pay—two terms that can be easily confused. 💭 Chambers and Partners suggest that global efforts to improve pay transparency, combined with increasing external pressures in the UK, might lead to more initiatives aimed at enhancing pay transparency. ❔ Are you taking action on extended pay gap reporting and pay transparency? This June, we'll celebrate Pride Month, in July, we'll recognise Disability Pride Month, and in September, we'll embrace National Inclusion Week. Despite these celebrations, many individuals continue to face discrimination in their professional lives. Here are some ongoing workplace DEI issues: - Only 19.7% of company board members are women (Deloitte). - The employment rate for ethnic minorities in the UK is just 62.8% (Dept. for Work and Pensions). - Disabled adults face double the unemployment rate of able-bodied adults (UK Government). - Transgender adults are twice as likely to be unemployed compared to cisgender adults (McKinsey & Company). Research shows that diverse teams boost productivity, innovation, and profitability. Skills-based hiring focuses on the abilities required for a job, not just degrees or titles, opening doors for underrepresented talent. Embracing skills-based hiring is crucial for mitigating bias, breaking down barriers, and fostering inclusive workplaces. The HRC's Corporate Equality Index isn't enough. This benchmarking tool has long been used as way for major corporations to "check the boxes" of LGBTQIA+ inclusion. While all of these policies and benefits are important, true inclusion is a feeling. The Corporate Equality Index is sorely missing employee satisfaction data and testimonials about how truly affirming and inclusive these workplaces are. Two of our members have been listed in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers 2024 🌈 KPMG and Osborne Clarke have both made the list for their amazing work over the past year for all LGBTQIA+ people. Like the rest of the list, both businesses have used Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index to benchmark their progress on LGBT workplace inclusion. The tool also identifies steps they can take to build a more equitable workplace. Here’s hoping next year’s list boasts even more members! “Whilst advances have been made, significant issues and challenges remain for the LGBTQ+ community. For instance, a report from the CIPD found that 40% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees had faced conflict and harassment in the workplace, rising to 55% for transgender employees, whilst research from Stonewall found 35% of LGBT+ employees hid their gender identity or sexual orientation at work. With LGBTQ+ individuals more vulnerable to pay inequities and discriminatory treatment, it is important that discussions surrounding D&I and supporting the LGBTQ+ community are meaningful and continue beyond Pride Month to drive real, positive change.” In this really useful Insight, Rebecca Matyear highlights what work firms can do to start enacting meaningful change.
